Iron Man BD-Live Statement from Paramount

Posted October 1, 2008 10:38 PM by Ben Williams

Paramount The following is a statement from Paramount regarding the BD-Live functionality of Iron Man:

"The Iron Man Blu-ray went on sale Tuesday and due to the overwhelming popularity of the release an unprecedented demand was placed on the BD-Live connection. The disc represents a truly state-of-the art Blu-ray presentation with a first of its kind BD-Live application. As such, the heavy amount of traffic strained the servers due to so many people heading to the same destination. The bandwidth capacity was increased in preparation for the release but the demand exceeded all expectations so capacity was expanded dramatically last night and local servers were established worldwide to accommodate all the fans. The issue should be completely resolved but if anyone experiences a brief traffic jam, we have provided consumers with a menu option during disc startup that allows them to go directly to the movie main menu or continue to download the BD-Live features."

Sweet. Demand is always underestimated when it comes to blu-ray.

Can't wait to get my Iron Man. I may have to wait till end of October though. I got it in a 3 for 2 amazon order and chose free shipping. Still it's a good deal for less than $16.

PS - Greg Maddux is King! An amazing pitcher. Everyone wish him luck in the playoffs with the Dodgers

Nice to see Paramount respond with an official statement. I hope they are better able to calculate demand next time.

I played the movie for the first time today and it loaded in about 2 minutes, not bad at all considering it was the first I put it in my PS3.

Thanks for the update and nice to see they're addressing it. Probably not the kind of attention they wanted but I hope they don't start playing it safe due to the complaints. Personally, I don't check out the special features very often so I don't base my purchasing decisions on whether they're included or not. But, I still think it's important for the format that the studios try to push the envelope and use the new features supported by the format. Even if that means going through some growing pains as the technology matures.

"...demand exceeded all expectations".

This is certainly a positive sign.

As I posted on the forums (because I really hope Paramount will be checking these comments).

"And you know what would help?

A PROGRESS BAR! As I said a few pages ago. Hopefully someone from Paramount is reading...ditto Universal, Sony, Fox, Disney, Warner...get on board, guys. This is essential stuff, and very, VERY easy to program."

I have gone through a couple of the Quizzes and have really enjoyed them. Give them a shot, I think you will have some fun testing your knowlegde of this awesome movie and awesome character.

Load times were not an issue for me.

Is it up to Paramount to have the BD Live Servers or are there dedicated Blu-ray Live Servers from the BDA and a studio like Paramount must obtain some share of those servers?

Studios set up their own servers.

I think many people bought IRON MAN

I wont be surprised if sales jump 200% - 300% for the week

dont be surprised if the first week sales of IRON MAN ends at a round a million

I bet the fact that paramount used lossless audio helps the sale of Iron Man. Warner should look very carefully at these sales figures.
