Iron Man Destroys Blu-ray Retail Records

Posted October 8, 2008 08:55 AM by Josh Dreuth

Paramount According to various retail sources, on average, 20% of all 'Iron Man' discs that were sold last week were on the Blu-ray format. For Internet-based stores, that percentage climbed to an astounding 50%. While final unit sales data has yet to be reported, it is expected that 'Iron Man' is the highest selling Blu-ray yet.

Oddly enough, Paramount Home Entertainment has yet to make an official statement on the sales data, but one thing is for sure: If 'Iron Man' hasn't already broken the 1 Million units sold barrier yet, it will likely do so by the end of the year.

Great news, hopefully this entices Paramount and the other studios to release major catalog titles eg Star Wars, Jurassic Park all the Lord of the rings etc rather sooner than later.

This is fantastic news, but honeslty not surprising. Paramount really did a great job with the release of this BD and the pq and aq are definitely reference quality. It is one of the most watched Blu-Ray films in my home and that won't change anytime soon. I feel the Dark Knight will surpass this title as far as sales go.

Awesome! And i do believe Dark Knight will take down Iron man as top dog, to only be beaten out later by LOTR, who will hold the spot firmly till Star Wars comes along on Blu. But i could be wrong. (but I doubt it!) LOL

I can believe it! Saturday my local Walmart was sold out. I had to go to Best Buy and they only had 2 copies left. Blu is getting popular.

Good news. Blu is steadily gaining ground and lord knows I've been spreading the word.

I wish they would make those Blu ray promo disc that run in the retail stores more available so people could pass them around and help spread the word even faster.

Let's call it the title that will make retailers and e-tailers take notice. TDK will supplant Iron Man's spot at the top and make BD even more of a force to be reckoned with. 20% of retail sales is absolutely awesome (50% online sales is nothing short of a miracle for BD lovers) -- especially when you consider the $ being spent is greater than that of a DVD and this is all going down at a time when the economy absolutely sucks.

Just wait until The Dark Knight comes out. Then you'll see some sales numbers fly sky high just like a 16-year-old's auto insurance.

Addcat.. just speaking from my experience I have a 5 speaker surround sound system and not a super high end one at that. I had to turn Iron Man down from my usual volume setting because it was much louder and more crisp than usual. The AQ was pretty phenomenal IMO =)

@addcat:

I too am using my Toshiba HDTV's builtin speakers and I had to crank the volume up over 90 just to hear it.

So is this an issue any one else experienced or only those of us without surround sound?
