Iron Man Sells Half Million Units on Blu-ray

Posted October 9, 2008 10:42 AM by Josh Dreuth

Paramount According to retailer reports, the Blu-ray version of 'Iron Man' sold 260,000 copies on its first day of sale - a record for the Blu-ray format - and has sold over 500,000 copies in its first week of sales, becoming the highest selling Blu-ray title of the year. Coming in a distant second on the Blu-ray sales chart was the Blu-ray release of 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall'.

Not surprising, 'Iron Man' is also the most widely owned Blu-ray title amongst users who have added their collection to their user profile. To check out other popular titles from our users, go to our Community page.

Zoinks! That's incredible.
Matrix only did 780,000 in its first week with NO OTHER MEDIUM available.

Blu is so here to stay. Can somebody send those numbers to Rob Enderle?

HUGE news! If this doesn't spark the studios to start pushing BLU like crazy, I don't know what will. I'm sure Paramount is still kicking themselves over the whole HD-DVD thing from last year. All that lost revenue... Oh well, they deserve a lot of credit for being one of BLU's best supporters since the end of the war. Thank you, Viacom!

Wow.

Now those are the numbers we've been waiting for.
I'm interested in seeing what title will hit the 1m mark.

Maybe late next year? Maybe Dark Knight? I'm thinking DK will hit 600-800k?

Just wait until more people get the player for Christmas. Iron Man will continue to sell well until Dark Knight blows it out of the water!

Sorry, prices still need to come down on movies. People just aren't rushing out to buy $25 - $35 movies. If they can't lower prices to something more friendly in our economic times, Blu just won't become mainstream.

Glad to see these numbers - but they could be much higher with a price structure change for Blu-Rays.

I want to know what retailers this includes because I'll bet it's higher than 500,000. I know Wal-Mart is not included in Nielsen, but I don't know if etailers are.

Interesting because I remember threads posting here where everyone was speculating over what title would be "the one" in terms of getting BD respectability.

Regardless of what numbers "The Dark Knight" brings in, it's clear that "Iron Man" IS "the one" (I, for one, don't actually think TDK will be as huge as people think -- yep, I'll buy it, yep it's a great film, but for repeat viewing and overall watchability "Iron Man" is actually a much, much better title. Remember the driving force behind most sales is family viewing, and many folks didn't even take their family to TDK, feeling rightly that it was a much darker film -- duh).

I wouldn't be at all surprised if many player sales are happening just because of Iron Man.

I wouldn't be suprised if the dark knight doulbed that number BUT

Lets be happy at these numbers for right now; it is a sign of the great things that are to come
