John Woo's Hard Boiled on Blu-ray (via PS3)

For the past few years, acclaimed director John Woo has been working on 'Stranglehold', a game which follows the Inspector Tequila and the highly choreographed gun fights that he seems to always be caught up in. The game is a continuation of the story of the insanely popular John Woo movie 'Hard Boiled', and those who pick up the collectors edition version of the game will the get the movie newly remastered in high definition on Blu-ray.
A few months ago, Midway, the company which is producing the game, polled users on its website if they would like Hard Boiled included with the purchase of the game. Users overwhelmingly responded that they would, and Midway has responded with $70 Collectors Edition of the game ($10 more than a regular PS3 game).
No word if this would be the only way to get the movie in high definition, but it will be a nice bonus for those who buy the game.

Wait.... I thought Dragon Dynasty (a Weinstein Company label) owned the rights to Hard-Boiled? They're releasing a special edition DVD soon... Isn't the Weinstein Company a HD DVD only company? Huh? Oh MAN, please let this be true..... |

oh yeah..man I loved that movie. Having it re-mastered on blu-ray is superb news. I wasn't awar e of this. My son was lobbying for the game - which i wasn't sold on - but I am now since the bundle effectively reduces the game cost as well.
More cross media bundling like this please... |

I'm definitely getting Stranglehold, whether or not I have a PS3 at the time. It's just a shame there won't be a PC version this good, since neither HD-DVD and/or Blu-Ray are being used for gaming there.
It's definitely good to hear that Dragon Dynasty got the rights away from Disney/Buena Vista. Supposedly, when John Woo heard that they planned to give "Hard Boiled" the same butchered treatment they gave all the other Dimension titles they've released, he threatened to convince most of the Hong Kong film industry not to work with them, and if anyone has that kind of juice, it'd be him.
I had a copy of the Criterion version a long time ago, but it's unplayable now. I really hope the new version has the same 5.1 audio as the remastered import version, especially the DTS track. And it's probably going to be the unrated version, too. |
