Blu-ray Sales to Double this Year

Posted October 17, 2008 06:16 PM by Josh Dreuth

Blu-ray Disc According to Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, sales of Blu-ray Disc movies are on pace to double this year, reaching a revenue of $1 Billion. While DVD sales are suffering from the recent economic struggles, Blu-ray sales are outpacing most other consumer electronics products. Equally impressive is that the percentage of Blu-ray sales compared to DVD sales is also increasing.

David Bishop, President of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, commented, "Considering the bad economic news that is all around us, Blu-ray sales continue to grow at a phenomenal rate. You cannot find any consumer electronics product or new delivery system that is performing at that percentage growth rate."

Paramount has benefited the most recently, selling over 200,000 units of the recent release of 'Transformers', and over 500,000 copies of 'Iron Man' in its first week.

The economy isnt as bad as the paper, tv or elected officials state. If people dont spend money on stuff the economy will get worse (not saying its bad now) so i am doing my part by purchasing Blu-ray discs

I think Blu-Ray has a chance to grow this year...I'm glad to see it beginning to take hold, but the format will still have some major work cut out for it this holiday season with the economy the way it is. I think this holiday season will see major growth, but I think next year is when the format will truly explode.

@ TruthTeller

That war has been over for some time now.

I'd go without food to get more Blu-Ray titles. Love it.

XundeadhunterX,

We could be headed toward an economic depression far worse than the Great Depression of the 1930s. It's not just about people buying goods. This economic disaster we're facing has to do with the collapse of the housing, stock, and credit bubbles (especially the $1 quadrillion in credit derivatives, something most people never hear about). Everything that went wrong in 1929-1933 is happening now, with some new stuff added in that will make everything far worse.

It also doesn't surprise me that Blu-ray is picking up the pace. One thing that is essentially recession and depression proof is the entertainment industry, as people seek escapism from the dreary reality they face every day. The golden age for cinema, for example, was the 1930s, and ticket sales have dropped in each decade since the end of the 1930s.

I predict prices for BD players and movies will continue to drop as the economy worsens to help entice people to buy and distract themselves with great movies. People will flock to buy HDTVs next year because of the convergence of analog broadcasts going away and the increasing affordability of HDTV sets (I plan to buy my first 1080p plasma in January, upgrading my current 720p CRT), and once you get that HDTV then upgrading to Blu-ray is the next logical step.

well honestly in a way a bad economy helps home video. now think about it people are not buying boats atvs jet skies. they are also cutting back on vacations and road trips so now they are bored so what people do buy are really nice hdtvs and they stay home. so some people are buying the latest disc technology to go with it because it is cheaper to get blu-rays then to go on vacation or buy toys so expensive you have to take out a bank loan.

I started collecting blu-ray movies in mid-july and im already up to 16 (hey, for a 15 year old sophomore thats pretty good lol) and on my 37 inch HD and 5.1 speaker set up, Blu-Ray movies are amazing. I'm glad I could contribute to the rise in Blu-Ray sales. With the holiday season coming up, I hope to reach 30 Blu-Ray movies by Christmas.

Steve Jobs, read those stats! Blu-ray Disc movies are on pace to double this year, reaching a revenue of $1 Billion! And you think Blu-ray is not worth putting inside the Mac Pro... Is it because Dell beat you to the punch?

HEY, I've only got 4 Blue Ray so far, but 33 HD-DVD's . (Just picked-up Shrek 3 for $5 at Wal-Mart yesterday). I've got plans to buy many more despite the economic downturn is the US. Up here in Canada were starting to fall but nowhere near the US yet. Let's just hope both our new governments have a smart sensible way to sustain economic growth. They need to realize the Arts push retail home entertainment spending which is a big part of today’s economy if they choose to realize it or not.

I hear ya AquaDSLGuy! The Walmart HD DVD $5.00 blow-out sales are amazing! I've picked up nearly 50 HD DVDs in the last few months and about 3 Blu-rays. I know the format is dead going forward, but my players work great and I've got a ton of great movies in High Definition that I would have had to pay 6 times as much for on Blu-ray.

I'm anxiously awaiting "wave 4" at Walmart.
