Sony and Universal Jointly Announce PoP

Posted October 31, 2008 09:00 AM by Josh Dreuth

Sony Pictures Sony Pictures/Music and Universal Studios/Music have jointly announced that they will soon launch a line of entertainment vending machines which they are calling "PoP". The machines, which look similar to other vending machines, will be filled with DVDs, and of course, Blu-rays of the latest films from the studios.

Additionally, the machines will features digital downloads of music from the two studios, which can be played on most types of portable music players or saved to SD cards. The machines will even feature PS3 games!

As the machines use touchscreen video displays, consumers will be able to preview trailers from the latest Blu-ray titles before making a purchase. And because they operate 24 hours a day, you can fill your high definition craving at any time.

When they do launch, Sony and Universal promise that 150 films will be available, though it is unclear how many of those films will be on Blu-ray. Launch details are expected shortly.

i doubt there will bet many blus but it would be nice to have the option regardless of quanity. I wonder if it will also be a dollar like the redbox. Its nice of them to include ps3 games also i can see vending machine bandits in the future.

will you be able to buy the movies or will you be able to only rent them? i can see the renting
aspect working, but i can't see the buying aspect working at all. they tried that once before
about 10 years ago and it never took off really. they were selling cd's then at the time, but it
wasn't long before the machines were gone.

So they'll get to sell their products (for RRP I'm sure) and NOT lose a cut of it to a retailer.

Bravo Sony/Universal, you may have just hit onto the next big thing in home entertainment revenue boosting.

I wonder how long it will take for other studios to follow suit if this works well...

Is this supposed to be news? I have seen these PoP machines in my are for at least 5 years now offering DVD rentals. They just didn't have Blu-Rays and was DVD only, but the concept is the same.

Gas stations, red lights, 4 way stops? Where will they be located?

It'll probably still be cheaper online so no-go for me. Not that we'll get them here in the UK anyway :-)

Interesting idea, but the prices will probably be much higher than online.

So this is like a RedBox??? And is this why RedBox just had to sue Universal because Universal was
wanting to take too large a portion of RedBox profits, and in turn, were plotting to put out their own
"RedBox" and didn't want any competition?

Seems like they're trying to compete with redbox. Seeing as how they're even carrying blu at some locations now too. If these pop machines aren't at $1 rentals, I'll stick to redbox.

Is this for rental or buying??? Also gonna depend on pricing. Would be awesome if they were to buy and they were alot cheaper than retail since they would be cutting out some middle men but I doubt it. I'm sure they will have to pay whatever stores or wherever these are placed at some monthly fees to have them on their property, just like other vending machines.

Very cool! This is the kind of stuff I like to see! Maybe I'll start renting here and there if the pricing is fair.

After reading this, it seems like buying only. It reminds me of the Apple PoP's. You can buy iPods, iPod accessories, etc. The PoPs in the airports have the Apple products listed above, as well as PSPs, PSP games, UMD's, digital downloads, etc.

All touch-screen based.

Not new in Tokyo where you can get everything in the 5.6 million vending machines. (that's one for every 20 persons) Americans will either steal or burn them, just to pass the time; especially after they try to return a bum disc.
