Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced the technical specs and special features for the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Kramer vs Kramer', which is due to hit store shelves February 17th. Video will be presented in 1.85:1 1080p AVC accompanied by a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. The sole extra is a documentary "Finding the Truth – The Making of Kramer vs. Kramer".
Sonny - It's a good movie. More driven by its acting performances (very strong leads) than by it's story. The story itself is a fairly simple one about a divorce with a small child in the middle made complex by its characterizations.
This movie is definitely one of my favorite performances by Hoffman, along with Tootsie (which i hope makes it to blu soon). Even though Streep is not in the picture for a long time, her performace is great (as it always is!!) This will also be a day 1 pick up for me!!
It's the very powerful telling of the death of a marriage and Hoffman's character rediscovering his need and abilities to be a dedicated father. I actually cried at the end of this picture when I saw it in the theater nearly 3 decades ago...
As for this movie beating out "Apocalypse Now" at the Oscars, you need to remember that Coppola had already won a boatload of the little statues by the time he got his Vietnam morality tale to the big screen and that Hoffman hadn't won any after his performances in "The Graduate", "Midnight Cowboy" and "Marathon Man". The Academy recognized this and needed to spread the wealth around to balance things out in the long run...
^ And don't forget Hoffman's peformance in 'Lenny' which also got him an Oscar nod but not the win in '74. Perhaps the biggest strike 'Apocalypse Now' had against it -- other than Coppola already being a highly-decorated individual -- is that the 1978 Best Picture Oscar went to another thought-provoking Vietnam picture (The Deer Hunter) and Oscar didn't want to go that route in back-to-back years.
^ Um, is that humor? If I get Seinfeld on Blu-ray at all, it had better be full seasons. Until then, I'll take all the Best Picture winners Sony wants to release.
