Today on Blu-ray - January 13

Posted January 13, 2009 02:39 PM by Josh Dreuth

Blu-ray Movies After an exciting CES 2009 - drooling over the latest Blu-ray hardware and software advancements - we are back to reality: Blu-ray releases. The latest sales data indicates that for the week following Christmas, Blu-ray took a record 16% of the home media disc market. Looks like all those new Blu-ray Disc player owners ran to stores to build a high definition library.

Today, Warner releases 'Appaloosa', the latest film to tackle the old west. While audiences weren't breaking down doors to see it (it only grossed $20M at the box office), critics were raving about it, meaning this film may become a huge Blu-ray hit! Or maybe not. Either way, make sure you give it at least a rent if your a fan other recent westerns.

Stargate fans get a huge release today with the Blu-ray release of 'Stargate - The Ark of Truth' which picks up where the Stargate SG-1 left off. I can remember watching the original film many years ago, thinking to myself 'That is an interesting concept'. Who knew it would become a top sci-fi franchise?

The rest of today's release's releases are a hodgepodge of Hollywood's worst. They include a Dane Cook-inspired comedy in 'My Best Friend's Girl, a horror film that even Jack Bauer can't save in 'Mirrors', yet another spoof with 'Superhero Movie', and a family-friendly political film (oxymoron?) 'Swing Vote'.

Haha, apparently some Mirrors fans on here, eh? It made a bit more money overseas than domestic, so maybe it has more of an international appeal?

May get Mirrors as I really enjoyed it. My Best Friend's Girl is one of the most infantile purile smutty movies I have ever seen. We turned it off half way through. May appeal to pubescent teenagers!

Appaloosa is way overrated. 3:10 to Yuma is a lot better.

Does anyone have an idea of where to pick up Ghost in the Shell 2 in the NYC area? Neither Best Buy, Circuit City, nor J & R stock it apparently

I think I will Netflix Appaloosa. Wonder if it will turn out to be as good as 3:10 to Yuma. If so, I may have to buy it.

Appaloosa was a fun western. Will get Stargate. I really loved Mirrors. It's one of the best horror flicks i saw of 2008.

"My Best Friend's Girl", be it a raunchy comedy it is still 10 times funnier than most of Dane Cook's movies.

Appaloosa was a fantastic western. Both Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen are spectacular. On the film's merits alone, I would easily recommend this movie to fans of the genre.
