Star Trek: The Captains' Summit (Bonus Disc)
70-minute exclusive roundtable discussion, hosted by Whoopi Goldberg, in which William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Patrick Stewart and Jonathan Frakes share candid moments and intimate details about life on the set
According to digitalbits, these are the orginal theatrical editions, none of the extended versions will be included. Also means that this is the first time Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country has been released in their normal, unaltered version on disc, DVD included. Watch for a Director's Edition of Star Trek I, II, and an Extended Edition of VI sometime in the future.
man, i'm so tempted to get this... but these are theatrical versions... i might have to hold off and wait for the director's cut/extended editions (which according to bill hunt, they will probably release later)... damn double dips...
Paramount's just teasing consumers with this set. There should be seamless branching with the Special Editions on the same disc. Just like rabid Star Wars fans, Paramount knows they will have no problem selling these discs to Trekkies. It's easy money. Just like when they originally released the DVD versions. First they did the theatrical editions, then double dipped on the Special Editions.
I'm with you TheManInBlu - don't care if theatrical version or not. First day purchase for me - hope to do a Star Trek marathon viewing w/ friends right before we go see the new film!
Glad to see the coming - but I'll wait for the releases featuring director cuts etc. and in single edition releases. Love the 7.1 audio! I'll be renting these till a more elaborate edition is released.
Check out the announcement on thedigitalbits.com for quite a bit more information. For example, while it isn't confirmed, they are suspecting that the NextGen films AND the new Abrams film might all be released as a boxed set, just in time for Christmas, of course, and that seasons 2 and 3 of the ST:TOS will be forthcoming as well. So....
Can I possibly hold out until the end of the year.....
I don't think so. We'll see. I don't know that the "extended versions" are all that important to me or if I'd even know the difference, having not seen the originals in so long anyway.
The special feature for the first film are a tad disappointing. However, I'm still excited for these new releases (and the other five aren't lacking in the extras department). I'll definitely get them, then me and my two fellow Trekkies can have a marathon. Lack of extended editions still ain't bothering me. I saw ST II on HBO (not HD , missed it) and it was the theatrical version. Still enjoyed it.
(note: if you still have the director's cut of the first Star Trak movie on 2- disc DVD, keep the second disc with bonus features. Just my thought.)
STII-TWOK is Trek at its best and indeed one of the best movies of the lot along with STIV:TVH directed by Nimoy which is a fascinating character study about Spock's devotion to logic vs being human. It was well directed too. STVI:TUC would also make a very worthy addition to my BD Star Trek collection. STIII:TSFS is pretty good but not as good as the even numbered Trek films. I would still get it though. I didn't care for ST: TMP or STV: TFF. ST:TMP was nothing more than a character reunion slapped together with cool special effects and way too slow, Like are we there yet? STV: TFF was without a doubt the worst ST movie ever put on film. Shatner is a fine actor and comedian but he's no director. The only reason I would consider buying the set is because of its costing no more than the four single Trek films that I want. Otherwise, I will just purchase the single BDs whenever they're released.
My dad is/was a big-time trekker, so I saw all the movies as a kid. I never got into them in their various DVD versions... but I suddenly really want to pick up this Blu-ray set. I most likely will. And I'm stoked for the new movie...
Great news, have to start saving up now. Can only imagine with what they charge for a 3-Disc set,
what they will charge for 6 + 1. To bad they left out the other four but, likely we will see a small box
set release at a later date, maybe when the newest movie comes out to Blu.
What about picture quality? any restoration work done? on regular DVD, they looked quite dirty and spotty. Wasn't there supposed to be a remastered version with cleaned up picture and sound etc.?
and, anybody know when Fox is going to release the rumored new re-restored (by Lowry Digital) version of ALIEN and the new cleaned up version of ALIENS?
I will rent them from blockbuster until they release the special editions with seemless branching than I will buy. I hate the double dip stuff. No reason for them not to release these blu's with seemless, other than pure greed. They take advantage of the ignorant.
I am supprised about the 7.1 audio. I find it a little odd that its DTS-HD MA for the show and the movies are TrueHD. Granted paramount are not doing the directors cuts at least they are putting an effort into this release with some extras and 7.1 sound track out the box.
I'm very excited. The extended editions of I, II, and VI were good ads. See here:
Trek I (Significant improvement): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079945/alternateversions
Trek II: The young man who dies is introduced to Kirk prior to launch as Scotty's nephew. Scotty is
extremely proud of the boy. This makes the death more emotional because of the connection and
you see why Scotty grieves. After the death of Preston in sickbay, there is a short scene between
Kirk and McCoy. Kirk asks McCoy if he's ok, and McCoy says yes and proceeds to thank Kirk for
getting them away from Khan, to which Kirk replies that they're only alive because he knows more
about starships than Khan does. When David and Carol arrive, Kirk tells Spock it is his son. Spock
replies it is "Fascinating"
Trek VI: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102975/alternateversions (4 minutes longer with Rene
Auberjonois now in film)
I have to say, I'm a bit torn. I could care less about the extended version V... but II... I may have to wait on this one. It will be very tough though for me to see it sitting on a store shelf and not pick it up. I'll have to trust in the force to keep me at bay. Oh wait, wrong "Star" series!!
I'm glad Star Trek has 7.1, it deserves the best!!!! I cannot wait for this to come out.
I'm going to buy it first day, no matter what the price is; well maybe
The Director's Edition of TMP is so superior to the theatrical release that it is a DISGRACE that it is not being released on Blu-ray. And what purpose does releasing the theatrical TUC serve? This is STAR TREK, not STAR WARS, so there is no excuse for behaving like old blubberneck Luca$, Paramount. You won't be getting my hard-earned £££ for these.
Warp Speed thanx Scottie... i can't wait to buy this set. However i do agree that the extended editions or directors cuts should be included in the set.
I'd get the 'unofficial' trilogy on blu. only if it had all the bells and whistles. can't watch part 1 and I
pretend 5 doesn't exist. so 2-4 and 6 would work for me. kinda like the indiana jones movies. KOTCS
was OKAY.
Sounds great; though the last two are snoozers and Undiscovered Country would be nice....I guess that will come out separately. So it's a complete set!; everyone will have favorites.
