Mitsubishi Announces In-car Blu-ray Player

Posted February 17, 2009 07:48 AM by Josh Dreuth

Mitsubishi Mitsubishi Electronics has announced that they hope to have a single-DIN Blu-ray player commercially available by the end of the year. The device - which measures 50x178x180mm - will be able to play BD-ROM, BD-R, and BD-RE discs. The player operates on Linux, and is expected to be paired with the companies existing in-dash navigation system.

At CES 2008, Panasonic also debuted a single-DIN in-car Blu-ray player, though, at that time it was much deeper than a typical car radio. Mitsubishi has not indicated whether the unit will be made available to consumers, or if they will be used solely as OEM equipment from auto manufacturers.

With studios now moving to include DVD Video with the Blu Ray Disc you purchase as well as digital Copy, the only reason you would need a BD drive in your car is to play first generation titles. Times are tuff and I don't see people rushing to add this to there ride, even if they already have a sound system.

It is not stupid. That is what we want!!! What do U think mass adoption means? Blu-ray must be everywhere, not just in your living room. It must be in the kitchen, bathroom, coffeeshop, cars, hotels,...
Plus some people have big TVs in their cars.

I wonder if they are going to include a HD sound system with the car player???

HA! I'm one step ahead of Mitsubishi! I've already implemented a blu-ray player into my car and to works flawlessly.

There are a few drawbacks though. There are no Multi-Channel, or Single Channel amplifers out there that have an HDMI port, nor any that can decode DTS HD-MA or TrueHD. Will there ever be one? Probably not. Thankfully my carPC is able to to decode all of these and then send it as a multi-channel analog. Secondly, it's only on a 7" screen, it doesnt look as good as it can.

While yes, it's only on a 7" screen, that's not why I put it in. I put it in (besides for something to show off at car shows) is that I've adopted the format and that's all I really buy now. So, if I go on a trip or a show and need some movies to show off, I can grab my favourite blu-ray and use that.

Mass adoption does not mean we should have blu-ray every where, try to do inventive things that people need or people are interested in without hesitation and not having accidents while driving.

agree with the first post, this is stupid. Is it just me or does it seem that these companies are trying to hard to push blu-ray onto the consumer, ive seen things like this happen in the past and the company goes belly up.

why the f$#%k go against it? If it suits your needs, then go ahead. I f it doesn't , why would you care? Like what YOU think is what makes things happen one way or another if it is meant to be that way. What I'm saying is let people with a ride decide if that's what they want(or need).
The heck with the rest.

It's not stupid, i'd rather just pop in my bluray disc instead of going out and buying the dvd version
just for the car. Who cares how big the screen is..

A Blu-ray player plays a Blu-ray and a DVD, whereas a DVD player just plays DVD.

Those people posting against this idea are suggesting that if we have an in-car DVD player and only have the title in Blu-ray that we must go out and buy the DVD edition.

The idiocy of some people is mind-boggling.

I cant wait to have an in car Blu Ray player. Its awesome when the wife and I are getting ice cream and park and put on a movie, and as of now we were only able to do that with dvds. Since adopting Blu Ray I refuse to purchase dvds.

I knew I shouldn't have bought the dvd system for my car last year:) I agree, not sure what all the people are getting up in arms about. I am building a blu-ray collection and would like to have a blu-ray player in my car. I will probably wait at least another year though to make that jump for the car.

If its available as an aftermarket add on, Ill have to purchase one of these. I know the screen size is small, but who could pass up putting BD in their ride?

The screen size has nothing to do with it. Its for people who want to be able to put their Blurays in their car. I have an in dash DVD, and now I cant put any of my blu's in there. I would snag one of these if they are affordable.

It isn't stupid to have a Blu-ray player in the car. Some of us no longer buy DVDs. Therefore, we cannot shut our kids up on long car trips with recent releases. And I really want them to shut up. So please! Bring on the Blu!

This is going to be very high end pricing on this. I mean, after market indash DVD players just became
somewhat affordable in the last year and half or so. I remember when the first DVD indash players
were coming out they were around $1,300 and up. I don't expect this to catch on anytime soon.

although... I'd change out my DVD indash in a second if it were affordable enough

I'm hoping to get a external Blu-ray player for my showcar. If they release one to the public at a reasonable price, I may just buy one.. No rush here though. I can always buy a cheap Magnavox and hook it up to my AC/DC converter. I feel in-dash units will be too large for most vehicles and problematic at this point in time :-/

The people who think it's stupid just don't get it... I want BD in as many places as possible! Nice
work Mitsu!
