Worldwide Blu-ray Sales On Pace for 100M Units in 2009

In a new report from Futuresource Consulting, the research firm is now saying that the Blu-ray format is currently on pace to sell 100 million units this year worldwide. The majority of those sales would still occur in the US, which is predicted to represent 80% of total disc sales. The second largest buyer is said to be the UK, which represent 40% of Western Europe in Blu-ray units sold.
Normally, I would not comment on analysis of this nature, but being that the analysis covers current year projections (rather than 3-5 years from now), I feel it holds more merit. As always, only time will tell.
In 2008, approximately 36 million units were sold of Blu-ray titles, an increase of over 300% from the previous year. Additionally, because of the success of Blu-ray in the US, the format has moved from the "early adopter" phase to "early majority", with sales expected to dramatically increase throughout the year.

Encouraging news. Let's hope 2009 is a banner year for Blu-ray. |

i think the players are affordable, its the studios that need to do there part now.
1.get those 29.95 bds down to 19.95,like they were priced in 2006.
2.make better movies.
btw there is a web site called,cheapzon.com and man they are cheap, check it out.what you would spend on 2 bd's you could buy 4 |

Whoa 100M units. And the 2009's Q1 isn't even done yet.
Like the others said before me; They need to bring the players and BDs down to $150 per player and $20 per BD and also release more catalog films and we would go miles ahead of DVD on the road to BD's Supremacy over the Home Video Market. |

If Lionsgate will continue to put out some good quality $10 blu-rays like The Descent, that would help a lot!! (i.e. 3:10 to Yuma for starters!!) |

Hey haushausman~ not all Blu-ray disc movie are $30. If you buy them on Amazon.com, some of them are less than $20 and some range towards $30 but Blu-ray is worth the money! Blu-ray disc for life! |

I'll continue to do my part but my wallet took a Blu beating last year. I'll have to pace myself this time. |

True, not everyone buys new releases for $30, but unless you get them on release week, it's a good
month or three before they go on sale again.
Then again, new-release DVD prices are a little bit ridiculous lately, coming out in the $20-25 range
rather regularly. |

I already have a huge DVD collection and now that we're blu-ray I'll have to pick and choose which movies to upgrade to blu. To attempt to do them all would basically kill us financially.
So far, I've been rather selective. I'm getting a few of my favorites, some block-busters and carefully choose those that are on the cheap. Oh, and those that get good reviews here.
I expect we'll have a nice collection in a year or two as blu gets cheaper and more people make the switch. |

Maybe they should have placed the UK in Region A (Region B can have Mexico). There could be the English-speaking Region (We in the US speak a language somewhat similar to English) and the non-English speaking region. |

Unfortunately some countries don't have Amazon. Here in Australia our titles are above $36. Sure I could import but with currency conversion & shipping it turns out the same. There is also Region locking to contended with. |
