Criterion Announces Two More, Including The Seventh Seal

Posted March 17, 2009 08:50 AM by Josh Dreuth

Criterion Criterion has announced that they will bring the 1957 classic film 'The Seventh Seal' to Blu-ray on June 16th, day-and-date with the DVD re-release. Additionally, they will bring Alain Resnais' 'Last Year at Marienbad' to Blu-ray a week later, on June 23rd, day-and-date with the DVD release. Both titles will be presented in 1080p video accompanied by PCM mono soundtracks.

Special features include:
    The Seventh Seal
  • Introduction by Ingmar Bergman, recorded in 2003
  • Audio commentary by Bergman expert Peter Cowie
  • A new afterword to the commentary by Cowie
  • Bergman Island (2006), an 83-minute documentary on Bergman by Marie Nyreröd, featuring in-depth and revealing interviews with the director
  • Archival audio interview with Max von Sydow
  • A 1998 tribute to Bergman by filmmaker Woody Allen
  • Theatrical trailer
  • Bergman 101, a selected video filmography tracing Bergman's career, narrated by Cowie
  • Optional English-dubbed soundtrack
  • New and improved English subtitle translation
  • A booklet featuring an essay by critic Gary Giddins

    Last Year at Marienbad
  • Director Approved Transfer
  • New, restored high-definition digital transfer, supervised and approved by director Alain Resnais (with an uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition)
  • New audio interview with Resnais
  • New documentary on the making of Last Year at Marienbad, featuring interviews with many of Resnais' collaborators
  • New video interview with film scholar Ginette Vincendeau on the history of the film and its many mysteries
  • Two short documentaries by Resnais: Toute la mémoire du monde (1956) and Le chant du styrène (1958)
  • Theatrical trailer
  • Optional original, unrestored French soundtrack
  • New and improved subtitle translation
  • A booklet featuring essays by critic Mark Polizzotti and film scholar François Thomas, and Alain Robbe-Grillet's introduction to the published screenplay and comments on the film

Last Year At Marienbad! Oh yeah! Now we're talking! Hats off to Criterion, baby!

It's so amazing that Marienbad is coming out on Bluray via Criterion. For such an awesome, offbeat film to come out on BluRay so soon is truly wonderful. I recall it being a relatively early standard DVD release ten years ago as well. I'm glad to be a part of its huge fan base!

"Last Year At Marienbad" is great news but the cover could be better. What's up with Criterion lately? The "Chungking Express" cover wasn't eye candy either...

Good God! I was a teenager, I was studying film history and techniques, and firmly engaged in looking for movies to see in art houses and museums, when Alan Resnais came up as an outstanding director. Perhaps because I was too young I disliked Last Year At Marienbad deeply. But, in later years, Resnais made a small jewell titled The War is Over, and I appreciated his talent as a filmmaker on a more reasonable basis. That's why my teachers insisted that we should see everything. As time progresses, we are expected to better ourselves, and eventually coming to realise what we could not, as youngsters.

I am not sure if Last Year in Marienbad is still on purchase perspective nowadays. But this is, nevertheless, one of the things I like about Criterion: in a market saturated by commercialism and hi-tech film hype, they are still able to lose their shirts and bet on films that are, by nature, difficult to watch by the majority of the public. And they do it in great style, as they see fit, quite properly, to the movie buff.

Paulo, your comment made me smile. Perfectly worded.

Bullseye--is the UK version region-free? And how was the transfer/disk in your opinion?

I wasn't aware that this movie was already available...and if it will play on North American players, then I may have to not wait for the Criterion release.

Then again, if I support Criterion, they may go and make a Blu-Ray of Seven Samurai, which I would pick up in a heartbeat (even though I just splurged and got the box set...after getting the original Criterion release. I'm sad, I know...)

I'm excited about Seventh Seal if the video quality merits.

New Criterion BRs are always cause for celebration. Still hoping for Seven Samurai soon.

The UK version was Region B, and its distributor, Tartan, has folded in the meantime.

Great titles here, both of them, although after 0 titles in February and only 1 in May, June getting
back up to just 2 is less than I hoped for. If the Blu-ray releases are doing as well for Criterion as
reported, it would make financial sense for them to offer at least three a month. But okay, they'll get
there.

One more IMPORTANT thing: Warner, see? Mono can be done losslessly.

I will be pleased to add my first Blu-ray Criterion to my collection with The Seventh Seal.

One of the few times I really wish it was already 3 months from now... Just have to wait. [Both excellent films imo.]

Actually, the UK version of The Seventh Seal is Region Free, just for reference. It plays just fin
eon my North American Playstation 3. Tartan has indeed folded since then, but the disc is still
floating around as well, just for those who are curious.

LAST YEAR AT MARIENBAD could be the coolest anouncement for BD so far. I hope WALKABOUT is still in the pipeline, because I sold my DVD!

Thanks for the info, Rich. There were conflicting reports on the region status of this release, so I just
went by memory.

There's a commentary for the british version of THE SEVENTH SEAL in the movies section of "blu-ray.com".

Check it out for more info.
And yes, it was Region Free.
Of course, that version won't compete with the extras of Criterion's. The Picture Quality, well, that COULD be something else...

Finally Marienbad becomes a reality. One could suspect it was coming for the longest time. This is the biggest blu-ray announcement of the year.

Can't wait to purchase this!
