Sharp and Pioneer have announced that they plan to merge their individual optical discs businesses into a single joint venture this October. Originally announced as part of Pioneer's restructuring plan, the joint venture will allow the two companies to consolidate their technology in order to improve their products.
The move will benefit both companies as they fight to gain a leading position in the growing Blu-ray market. To date, the two companies have failed to maintain Blu-ray Disc player sales equivalent to leading rivals Sony, Samsung, and Panasonic, and they are hopeful that a joint venture will allow them to be more competitive.
Sharp is the largest shareholder of Pioneer stock at 14%.

For pioneer, it good they are bringing bd players that are cheap this may. Thats a good starting point. For sharp, they need to make more improve players like sony and the others. |

One of the reasons Pioneer BLU-RAY players were not selling that well was that they only had profile 1.0 and profile 1.1 players when Panasonic, Sony, and Samsung had profile 2.0 players in 2008. Now in 2009 Pioneer is releasing all profile 2.0 players with a bigger selection of low, medium, and high-end. I am now very interested in the new profile 2.0 Pioneer players that are starting to appear. Many of the new Pioneer players have built in memory to make BD-LIVE easy to use. |

@ Blu_Beast : "I doubt ill own a blu-ray player other than the ps3 anytime soon"
Just in case you didn't knew, the PS3 can't do 7.1 DTS-HD (Master Audio or High Resolution). It can only do 5.1 DTS-HD (it seems), so it will convert the 7.1 DTS-HD sound track in standard DTS or 5.1, so having a stand alone BD Player is the best way to watch movie in 7.1 DTS-HD, since the PS3 can't do it and since many movie are released in 7.1 DTS-HD.
I've read this in the PS3 User Manual. Check out on page 22 if you still got your User Manual ;-)
If i'm wrong, and that i've misinterpreted the specification of the User Manual, please someone let me know, cause it's clearly written this : "This system does not support output from the DTS-HD 7.1 Ch. DTS-HD 7.1 Ch. audio is output from a 5.1 or lower channel." |

I read the PS3 booklet but you seem to have lost track of all the firmware updates that added DTS-MA 7.1 sometime ago. The User Manual is a great resource but does not include all the firmware updates made to the system. |
