Blu-ray Q1 Sales Double from Last Year

Posted April 16, 2009 08:56 AM by Josh Dreuth

Blu-ray Disc According to new research conducted by Adams Media Research, Blu-ray sales during the first quarter of the year were approximately 9 Million units, double what they were during the same period last year. The huge increase in sales can most likely be attributed to an explosion in Blu-ray enable homes, which are now estimated to be 10.5 Million.

More importantly, of the 10.5 Million US homes that have a Blu-ray player, nearly 75% (7-8 Million) own stand-alone Blu-ray players, around twice as many as the same time last year. The correlation is obvious - twice as many Blu-ray players equals twice as many Blu-ray sales.

Andy Parsons, U.S. Chairman of the Blu-ray Disc Association Promotions Committee and Senior VP of Product Planning at Pioneer Home Entertainment, commented, "We are delighted to see continuing, significant growth of the Blu-ray Disc format in the midst of one of the worst economic downturns in recent memory. I think the numbers are a clear indicator that consumers really do understand the value of packaged media, and that even when times are very tough, [consumers] continue to seek out and enjoy the best possible high-definition content."

Onward and upward. As long as they keep lowering the MRSP the future is indeed blu.

Ever since the format war ended, Blu-ray sales have been skyrocketing. I purchased a PS3 and my first Blu last August and I've been buying more movies than ever since!

What I want to see is the price reduce substantially. In Australia you are looking at between $AU 35 to $AU 45 for ONE BluRay disc.

I believe that this Christmas may be the first of many which will have huge discounting wars - which will attract new buyers.

I remember looking for titles in Australia for Christmas and the range of titles available was a joke.

GO BLU !!!

There's much more choice in films available also, that would also increase the number of Blu-rays sold.

I would be curious to see a sales breakdown. For instance, did all categories experience the same level of growth? More specifically, did back-catalog sales experience the same level of growth as new film releases?

Good news. I'll continue to do my part touting the format but I have to cut my Blu spending. No more whipping out the plastic every time a hot title is available or on sale. This won't be easy.

Good news. Need 2 things: lower prices especially in retail stores and more major and popular titles (complete and uncut - director's or extended cut with option for theatrical version on same disc).

I know this is a pro Blu-ray site and I also own a PS3 and about 30+ BD discs; however, there was more to the article. Adams also said that there was no decline in DVD sales and stated that the BD acceptance is now slower than the DVD rollout. He claims the recession caused it, but acceptance was faster than VHS. WOW!!! The recession affected BD sales but not the DVD sales. To make the BD rollout look impressive we now have to compare it against VHS. Here's another quote from the article “That’s why we think we are facing another down year overall for disc sales in total and a pretty flat year in 2010 at this point.”

Well bluray could sell more if..
1. Lower prices a tad.
2. release more older classic titles.
3. Actually produce good transfers that are worth picking up.

steve_99101, I agree with you. I'm very wary about downloading movies online. Movie files take up tons of disc space and that's even when the video quality is less than good.

Hell Yes!
I hope "Includes DVD" starts becoming wide-spread.
An actual DVD instead of Digital Copy is more useful.
You want iTunes video for your iPod, get one!
DVD is better and more suited for laptops and portable devices/even in-car DVD players.

Honestly I think studios should just get rid of DVD-DC combo, it just wastes space and cost,
since I don't ever use the DVD that comes with my Blu-ray or digital contents... If studios can
make Blu-ray cost cheaper with the lack of DVD/Digital contents, I'm all for that.

Oh and GOOD NEWS for Blu-ray! I can't wait until the day, DVD becomes 10% of the market
share, I know it'll be some time before that happens but I want everything on Blu-ray!!

ATTN: Web Master, why is that my text always becomes out of order when I edit my
comments?? This happens in the review as well...

I know I do my part to account for the increased sales even though I purchased BD's at this time last year. There are at least twice as many BD's being released each week, so I find myself buying twice as many titles as I used to. I hope the increase is more because there are new adopters rather than the same consumers buying twice the number of discs. Either way, you can't argue with doubling your sales figures.

i didn't mean any disrespect to blu with my comment posted above, i own my fair share of blu's. i'm not sure if i'm alone on this but i don't buy everything on blu just because it is blu, i only buy the movies that look great and worth the cost of a blu-ray, for example Quantum of Solace, Transformers, Matrix etc. i'll stick to buying DVD's for other movies like comedies and such, you can save $10-$15 per movie that way, i'd rather own more movies than fewer just on blu-ray, by the way i'm sure i'll get burned for this lol

Same here. There are movies I would never touch. I only buy if I like the movie. I happen to like a lot.
