Warner Announces Red2Blu Program

Posted April 22, 2009 08:34 AM by Josh Dreuth

Warner Bros. Warner Home Video through their WBShop.com website has announced that they will now allow HD DVD owners to exchange their old Warner HD DVDs for the Blu-ray version. This may be the last chance for owners of the now defunct high definition format to salvage some worth from their film libraries before sacrificing the discs to the dumpster gods.

The process is simple:
  1. Click here and select the HD DVD titles you want to exchange for Blu-rays.
    • Limit one exchange per title
    • Upgrade fee of $4.95 per title
    • Shipping fee of $6.95 per order ($8.95 per order for Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico)
  2. Mail the original cover-art to Warner's processing center
  3. Receive new discs in 4-5 weeks

Its great to see that Warner is admitting some responsibility for their previous decisions (beyond management reconstruction). I will be eager to see if Paramount and Universal will also follow suit with similar exchange programs of their own.

If you have multiple HD-DVD players then you won't toss em in the garbage.

Even more interesting is that you only have to send back the covers (if I'm reading the FAQ right) and not the discs. I guess you can upgrade and keep the actual disc, sounds like a win win to me .

Do you have to send them the disc, or just the cover art? Depending on the movie, not a bad deal.. BD version for basically $12.

If I remember correctly Paramount has a program where if you had purchased a DVD or HD DVD version of a movie and you decide to buy A Blu version you are eligible for a $10 mail in rebate. That's what I'm going to do seeing how I have Transformers on DVD and had to wait for the Blu version because of that last minute move Paramount made.

At least their making an effort, I'm sure it will help a couple people.

It is cool that they are doing this... I just wish they had done it sooner!!! ARRG!

I originally got The Ultimate Matrix Collection and the Oceans movies collection on HD-DVD.

I rebought the Matrix set on Blu-Ray not too long after it came out, when Deep Discount had their 25% off sale.

But at least that was several months ago. The real kicker is that within the past 2 or 3 weeks, I bought the Oceans set on Blu-ray. Granted, I got a pretty decent deal for it, but this would have been a lot better.

I do hope that Univeral and Paramount do follow suit, because I still have a few movies that I would upgrade in that scenario.

I'm willing to bet they are still making a profit on those discs. I read an article a while back showing the costs to make a BluRay, it was somewhere in the neighborhood of $1.50 per disc (for large runs), then add some for packaging and you aren't even to their upgrade fee. The shipping overcharge is obvious. Just thought I'd point out that they aren't be very altruistic, just business as usual.

Now all the HD-DVD box sets are going to start selling considering if you do the math you can then get the Blu-ray counterparts for ALOT CHEAPER through this program :-p

I guess I don't really see the point - I have both HD-DVD and Blu's but the HD-DVDs I own from Warner aren't significantly different from the Blus (i.e. Ultimate Matrix and Harry Potter Collection - Both are High Rez and have lossless sound...) - so if the only justification is that I'm not watching a defunct format, then, to me, its pointless.

I wouldn't say the shipping is really an over charge, since it's a flat rate.

If you put all 25 discs on one order, shipping is just $6.95.

A local grocery store here had HD DUDs way cheap... I have never owned one but I doubt it would make sense to go buy them and exchange them.... likely easier just to keep a look out for the used Blu Rays in the first place.

Still... they should ask for the disc not the cover art... then the HD DUD discs could be destoyed as they should be since they were a mistake from the start.

I wonder what this means for Casablanca HD-DVD owners. Does this mean that the stripped-down Blu-ray release is just around the corner?

I would still really like an HD-DVD copy of Fast and the Furious to use as a coaster.

Actually, it's less than $12 per disc. The $6.95 shipping fee is a flat fee. So you are getting the movie for $5 for the most part. Check the FAQs for more details.

I need to call Warner Brothers to see which version of Superman Returns will be sent. The DD5.1 or the version with DolbyTrueHD and PCM?

I'm not paying $5 to "upgrade" to lesser sound.

I would like to thank WB for this offer. Now if Universal would be so kind...(cough, Bourne Trilogy, cough)

With those Warner titles since the BD's aren't an improvement over the HD DVD's, i'll keep the HD DVD's that I have as they still play with my player. However for those who got rid of their HD DVD players, this is a great program for them to replace their discs.

This is a good thing for the people who chose poorly in there decision when switching to HD.
