Crouching Tiger Coming to Blu-ray as Part of Box Set

Posted May 4, 2009 09:04 AM by Josh Dreuth

Sony Pictures Sony Pictures Home Entertainment have announced that they will bring the 'Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Curse of the Golden Flower, and House of Flying Daggers Trilogy' to Blu-ray on July 14th, marking the first time 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' has been made available in high definition. Video will be presented in 1080p AVC and MPEG-2 accompanied by soundtracks in both 5.1 PCM and 5.1 Dolby TrueHD audio formats.

The discs included in the trilogy for both 'Curse of the Golden Flower' and 'House of Flying Daggers' appear to be the same discs as released previously on Blu-ray. It is unknown at this time if 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' will be made available separately at a later date.

Not only are they missing the opportunity to redo "Daggers" (which can so be done), but they're putting out the old, old MPEG-2 encode of "Crouching Tiger" out to boot.

Now this is a shame. Some of the most visual movies of the past ten years will end up looking subpar.

I thought only MGM was up to such tricks anymore.

Well, it would be nice to get that movie after much speculation by the studio to release it back in the early days of Blu-ray. I am excited to see it finally make it to blu-ray, but I already have Curse of the Golden Flower. I didn't get House of Flying Daggers due to many negative reviews of the picture quality. So, if they release the same discs of House of Flying Daggers; I won't be picking this one up. Let's hope that Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon will soon be made available seperately.

So wait, we can only get CROUCHING TIGER in this 3-PACK?! I already have the other 2 titles, though. Is there any way to get CROUCHING TIGER by itself?

i really don't know how to feel about this LOL

been waiting for crouching tiger for quite some time now and glad that its finally coming, but i don't wanna have to put in the extra cash for 2 movies that i don't believe are up to par with it. i can settle with flying daggers, but i really disliked golden flower.

what im REALLY waiting for is HERO tho.

Seretur, I didn't read it is Crouching Tiger to be in MPEG2. I read it as HOFD, and COTGF to be in MPEG2, because those are already available with those codecs. Crouching Tiger will be in AVC and True HD!

This is starting to become annoying, all these sets forcing us to buy movies we don't want because there are no single releases (Fast and Furious Trilogy is a fine example). Why don't they just release the movies separately? Especially since Crouching Tiger has nothing to do with the other two

Maybe it will be released separately in another region. I have a player that can play movies from all regions, but if it's locked, it will still be a problem. Eh..rental for me, though I was looking forward to seeing this in Blu-real shame if they batch up the transfer (again!)

Calling this a TRILOGY would be like calling COMMANDO, TANGO AND CASH and LOCKED UP a "trilogy"!! "Hey, there's 3 movies with white, muscle-y guys in it. They must be a trilogy" - So the studio must think the public is dumb; "Hey, these 3 Chinese movies each have Chinese actors and actresses in them. They must be part 1, 2 and 3. I'm a dumb consumer" - A Trilogy would be: The BOURNE's.. The FAST & FURIOUS'... The SPIDER-MAN's...etc

Smells like a total rip off to me. Those three movies are NOT a trilogy. A lot of us already own the first two, then we have to buy the set to get Crouching Tiger...? Sony better wake up and smell the coffee on this stunt. A HUGE thumbs down!

It's a nice to have....but I'll pass.

Release titles seperately. Do not try and force us to buy other movies if we only want one of them. I will pass on this.

so...all these three movies inside a box? I think I can do this at home. Just put in three of my favorite movies with the same actor/actress inside a shoe box. I think Ill pass.

so many lost sales due to stupidity. I have curse & house...i'd totally buy either this set if They re-did house with a better mastering job or just sell the damn crouching tiger seperate!

Seretur I TOTALLY agree, it's a shame seeing HOFD on Blu-ray the way it is...I was just watching it yesterday and thinking damn...they could so revamp this whole movie.

If they come each in their own Blu Amaray case shrink wrapped together like The Chronicles of Riddick and Pitch Black 2-Pak, then at least we can sell Curse and House on eBay or something to recoup some of the coin, right?

Robert, guys -- here's hoping that "Crouching Tiger" does get the AVC encode it so richly deserves! Philip Pau did win an Oscar for cinematography there, of course (and so did Tan Dun for his music), so this should be as top-notch as possible.

And I do hope that Sony eventually put it out as a separate release.

BTW, just randomly, Shigeru Umebayashi's score to "Daggers" just rotated into my iTunes playlist.

I only want Crouching Tiger. Sounds like it is AVC. *whew*

They are not marketing this as a "trilogy"-they are 3 martial arts type films, and hence they are putting in a "box set". This is frequently done to "bundle" movies that may not have done as well, with those that did do well. It's all about margin. I only want Crouching, as I have the others, which I purchased during the good old days of the BOGO's. I'll be investigating separate releases-no boxset for me.

Okay, they REALLY need to release Crouching Tiger on its own because Amazon's price on the "trilogy" is currently $83.49. I am also in the same boat as many others who already own the other two movies. As much as I like CTHD, there is no way I can justify that price.
