HDTV Ownership Jumps 73%, Fuels BD Growth

Posted May 27, 2009 06:19 AM by Juan Calonge

Blu-ray Disc High-definition television ownership in the US jumped 73% in the past year (to about a third, up from 19.3% a year earlier), due to falling prices and the upcoming switch to all-digital broadcasts. The leap also fueled growth in spending on Blu-ray players and software, Nielsen reported last week.

The higher number of HDTV households has helped boost BD spending even as overall home entertainment sales fell. Meanwhile, the number of Blu-ray players sold in the first quarter jumped 72% from a year earlier because of more HDTVs in households and falling prices.

"Despite the current economic climate, HD is on course to becoming the benchmark in television viewing," Nielsen said. "As prices of HDTVs continue to fall and circumstances such as the Digital Television Transition create opportunities to further promote HD sets and services, HDTV will gain a greater foothold in U.S. television homes."

Hopefully those new owners start buying catalog titles. They are key to the format's growth.

This is GREAT news...now if we can just get all of these HDTV owners-to-be to buy a PLASMA television, they'll really be set.

LCD is our misfortune

Well when a movie theater ticket costs north of $10-$12 it makes sense to buy a nice HDTV for the home for a few hundred bucks or even a couple of thousand bucks for a nice 52" TV.

I agree with Damnsam77. I just finished my home theater setup a few months ago and had not gone to the movies until Star Trek came out, I spend almost $40 on just me and my wife. Also noticed that seeing it on a big screen was awful compaired to BD movies on my 52" 120hz Smasung. I will save my bucks and buy them on BD when they come out which seems only about 6 months from release date.

4Dblu hit the nail on the head. Blu-ray movie prices need to start dropping. Especially on titles that were released on VHS, DVD, LaserDisc and now Blu-ray. Is $30 really a good price point; no.
