BD Sales Information for Week Ending May 24 (Updated)

Posted May 28, 2009 06:30 PM by Juan Calonge

Blu-ray Movies According to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert, 'Valkyrie' was the top-selling title on Blu-ray in the US for the week ended May 24. Second place was for 'Taken', the top-selling title the week before. 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop', despite winning easily on the overall DVD/Blu-ray charts, only managed third place in Blu-ray, outsold by 'Valkyrie' by nearly 2 to 1. 'My Bloody Valentine 3D' got number 4.

Here is the Blu-ray top 10:
  1. Valkyrie
  2. Taken
  3. Paul Blart: Mall Cop
  4. My Bloody Valentine 3D
  5. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans
  6. True Blood: The Complete First Season
  7. A Bug's Life
  8. Terminator 2: Judgment Day
  9. 24: Season 7
  10. Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection
As regards market share, the highest BD ratios for new releases of the week were for 'My Bloody Valentine 3D' and 'Valkyrie', which got 21% and 20%, respectively. TV series '24: Season 7' and 'True Blood: The Complete First Season' grabbed 15% and 14%, whereas 'Paul Blart: Mall Cop' got only 7%.

Update

Home Media Magazine has now published the already-familiar pie chart comparing aggregate unit sales of the top 20 BDs versus the top 20 DVDs. The split for this week is 14% BD: 86% DVD.

Total revenue from BD sales was $20.92 million, up 119.47% from the same week last year. DVD revenue was $178.53 million, down 13.10% year-on-year.

BD accounted for 10.5% of total packaged-media sales revenue.

Xerios...I couldn't agree more.

I don't think I've ever had less interest in a movie.

As expected. New releases will usually trump catalog titles.

maybe because Mall Cop is a newer film.

I say it's good news. At least this is showing that even comedies are selling well on Blu-ray. Also, A Bugs Life isn't exactly on sale anywhere (I want it too). Paul Blart, though.... Not so much.

Im really glad that Valkyrie is doing well. I purchased this on blu ray last week (never saw in theatres) and think its a wonderful film. Thats really sad that an amazing film like a bugs life gets outsold by another cookie cutter comedy like paul blart, especially considering how amazing the PQ and AQ of a bugs life is, pixar/disney puts more effort into their BD released than any other studio

Good to see the sales #'s for the week posted. I like other am surprised that Paul Blart outsold A bugs Life. Guess most people have it on DVD or are waiting for a decent sale like myself.

Valkyrie was definitely a good movie and a great blind buy if you have never seen it. I really enjoyed the movie in the theater, but could not watch it again. I already knew what was going to happen, so it was just a matter of watching how they depicted the story. As far as Paul Blart goes, I am just glad I rented that and did not do a blind buy. :-)

Bug's Life never really looked like anything I would ever be interested in watching (much less buying). Ditto for Blart. May check out Valkyrie at some (cheaper) point.

A Bug's Life is an absolute classic and must own title. I'm just waiting for a price drop. The only Blu-ray I've ever paid full price for was Akira, and that took a lot of considering.

Wow, I thought 24 S7 would be higher on the list. It had sold out at a couple stores I went to.

Paul Blart being ahaead of Bug's Life does not shock me. I love Bug's Life and even bought the movie on Blu, most people may not want to upgrade if they already own Bug's Life. Blart is a new movie.

I ONLY purchased A Bug's Life and it is AWESOME. The 6.1 sound alone is worth the purchase. And the picture quality is 5 out of 5 in my book.

This is the perfect example of how the movie studios are trying to squeeze every dime out of the consumer. A Bug's Life is a catalog title that was first released on VHS (I have one) so when they re-re-re-release it onto BD they charge way too much, I think it's about $30 at every local store. If they charged around $18 they would sell 3 times as many which would actually increase their sales and bottom lines. Whatever, I am just venting because I see every other part of HD and Blu-ray coming down in price execpt the movies themselves.

Anyone that will waste the extra cash for Paul Blart on Bluray likely has money to burn or simply spends their money very unwisely. That flick is barely worth the price of rental, nm almost $30 for the Bluray version.I don't think i'd be able to tell anyone without extreme embarassment that i just picked up Paul Blart:Mall Cop on Bluray so i could watch it in all it's 1080p glory, if i was crazy enough to do so..

Is Bugs life 5.1 or 6.1? The reviews I have seen say 5.1...once this baby goes on sale it will be mine.

I was very hesitant to Buy "A Bugs Life" as like most of you I like big sales. HOWEVER there is a free movie ticket in there for "Up!" So I ponied up the $27.99 (at Costco) for it, and with the $8.50 ticket inside I'm just telling myself I really sorta only paid $19.49 for it.

And I just returned from "Up!" and it's an AMAZING film, I highly recommend seeing it, esp in 3-D, plus a nice little trailor for "Toy Story 3" coming out next year

"Up!" will be a definite buy for me on Blu when's released as well
