Five Free Blu-ray Movies with Purchase of Player

Posted June 26, 2007 08:17 PM by Josh Dreuth

Blu-ray Disc The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) has revealed an exciting offer for those of you who are still looking to pick up a Blu-ray player. If you purchase a Blu-ray player (including the PS3) between July 1st and September 30th, you will automatically qualify to receive 5 Blu-ray movies absolutely free. Combine this with existing offers (like the 5 free Blu-ray movies with purchase of a Panasonic DMP-BD10A), and you could receive up to 10 free Blu-ray movies with the purchase of a player. But wait, there's more! If you decide you would like to purchase a PS3, Sony is offering a special deal through their retail Sony Style stores. Purchase a PS3, two games, and an extra controller from now until July 8th, and you will receive a $50 gift card. Rebate information can be found at the following site: www.bluraysavings.com The site isn't up yet, but expect it to go live when the deal starts this weekend.

When HD DVD started this, it was desperation, now people say it's "game over." I'm well aware that BD is winning, and I hope this does sway people, but watch your words.

OK now im not saying this is the same as HD-DVD's sale. I think (think being the key word) that this is simply a response to HD-DVD recent "Buy a player, get x amount of movies free" sale. I don't think its a fire sale, but I do agree with nhaase, there appear to be some hypocrites here. Do watch your words.

Not a bad response by the BD Association. They sort of had to do this. HD DVD is really giving away their hardware now. Add in anywhere between 5 - 8 free movies (depending on the promo) and that's not a bad offer (even if it's the dying format). BD Association throwing in 5 free movies puts a lot more pressure on HD DVD - like how much more can HD DVD afford to give away? I don't know if this is the nail in the coffin, but it is a nice submission hold at a time when HD DVD really can't handle any more bad news...

This will bring the price to reasonable border, now Blu-ray is cheaper than HD DUD!

I think this a good offer and an in-your-face to HD-DVD. I read this as the BD Association saying ok HD-DVD, if you want to play this game, lets. We're already winning by a large margin both on the hardware side and software side, but if you really want to lose quicker, then ok. Since everyone interested in the format war ultimately loves movies, we'll play your game and speed this war up. Nice move!

This promotion will certainly make the salespersons' job easilier at CC, BB, Fry's to push BD/PS3 players.

If it's 5 of any movie you want then it will be extra huge. If people could pick up a player and two of last week's newly released blockbusters than we're Gold Jerry, GOLD!

I bought mine on the 20th. I hope there might be a grace period for purchase. Time will tell.

What's hypocritical? If 5 free movies from HD-DVD is desperation, then 5 free movies from BD has to be desperation, too? Nope, the context is completely different. From a format that's behind in hardware, software and studio support, it looks a little desperate. From the winning format, it looks like good marketing to me.

This is a great move from the BDA to really put the pressure on on HD-DUD. Hey HD-DUD did this to themselves am not hating on the BDA for them trying to play their game. Hopefully this will be the nail in the coffin and push those people that were on the fence to come over to the Blu side.
