Rumor: Grindhouse Theatrical Experience BD

Posted June 23, 2009 04:50 AM by Juan Calonge

The Weinstein CompanyAn early announcement to retailers indicates that Genius Products and The Weinstein Company are set to release Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's 'Grindhouse' on Blu-ray on August 11. No edition details are available, other than this would be a two-disc set, but it may well be the theatrical Grindhouse double feature.

'Grindhouse' was conceived, edited and shown theatrically (in the US) as a typical exploitation double-feature as one could attend at cheap theaters in the 1970s: it consisted of two features ('Planet Terror', by Robert Rodriguez, and 'Death Proof' by Quentin Tarantino), interspersed with fake trailers and bumpers.

However, the film underperformed theatrically and the films were released separately (in expanded versions) on home video. The Grindhouse double feature wasn't even released theatrically in Europe, and its only DVD release so far is a coveted special edition from Japan.

It had long been rumored that the Grindhouse experience could be released on disc to tie in with 'The Inglourious Basterds'. But considering the increasing financial problems that The Weinstein Company is going through, which even made them give up the home video rights for 'Basterds' (see our post of June 8), many had already given up hope.

Never seen these together and already own Planet Terror on Blu. Not sure if I'd be interested in this. Wish I could get the best of both worlds - like a 3 disc edition offering separates and the theatrical

Could see this 2 disc set just being the 2 discs from the separates bundled together though.

That's what I thought at first, but Planet Terror is already a 2-disc edition so unless they drop the extras disc from PT it can't be that.

oh please put both movies on one disc and use the second disc for special features. I've been holding out for so long for the possibility of Miramax putting them together again.

This is the only way I'll upgrade my PT& DP DVDs.

I was really hoping for an ultimate edition mega-set, with the theatrical cut, new special features relating to it, and the extended cuts of both films with all of the special features from the other discs.

I've never cared for the extended version of either PT or DP. The theatrical cut was the best version of each, and its a shame the only way to get a version that includes the Don't and Thankgiving trailers is either bootleg or Japanese DVD. I really hope we're talking one disc with the theatrical cut and the second with special features (and the Hobo with a Shotgun trailer).

I'm pretty much fine with just having the PT set. I didn't really like Death Proof. It should have been titled "Babbling B*tches" because that's all it seemed to be.

I would like the trailers, but I'm not buying another set just for them.

GRINDHOUSE theatrical cut - YES! I'll take it. This may be the last BD Weinstein releases before being gobbled up.

Saw these in theatres. It was fun with all the trailers and all but I'm one of those in the minority who loved Death Proof and didn't care for Planet Terror. I own Death Proof and love it even more with every new viewing. Too bad the faux trailrers aren't included. As for an edition containing both films, I'll gladly pass.

This better damn well happen. Have been tempted to get the 6-disc Japanese DVD set... So c'mon already! And where in the hell is Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair already?!

Awesome!!! I was just thinking about when they would release the theatrical version on blu-ray.

This belongs as Top News!

well I'm ONLY upgrading if they do the theatrical experience! Already have the steelbook DVDs and even as 3-disc sets they don't include the genius trailers that aired in between the features (which was a highlight of seeing it on the big screen)! So fingers crossed I guess!

I own the Japanese 6-disc set, it is amazing, if this translates to BD as well as it did SD, this will be the primo release this year: the care that went into it - this is a great morning now, and amen to Rhylliam about Kill Bill, that rumor has been scratching my well being for awhile

If they don't put both movies on one disc for continuous "grindhouse" style play, then I am not buying. They can put all the extras which won't fit on the feature 50GB disc on a second 25GB disc, but the movies need to be put on the same feature disc back to back.

Memnoch

Yeah, only buying if this is both movies w/ trailers in between on one disc, just like what we saw in the movie theater.

And yes, please put both Kill Bills together and release on a single disc as well.

Special features are nice, but I rarely have time to watch them anymore, especially after watching 3-4 hours worth of movies. The last thing I want to do is watch another 3-4 hours of special features. It took me half a day to get through all the Woodstock stuff. Geez.

I'd pay just about any price to get the Theatrical version of Grindhouse. This was the only way to see this movie. Don't take my word for it though. Stream it on Netflix and see for yourself. The fake trailers alone make this disc a MUST HAVE!

First, Death Proof OWNS Planet Terror. Second, watching them independently is terrible. I have both on DVD and it's much better to watch them together. I saw Grindhouse 2x in theatres.

Will they be scratching the discs before shipping so they'll more closely resemble that which they're aping? Because, you know, aspiring to badness is sooo cool.

I saw the double feature in theaters and LOVED IT! the only way PT and DP should be seen is as a double feature how it was meant. Plus the fake movie previews in between the films is a blast. I for one am hoping this rumor comes true

Walmart has this listed for $23.86 on their website with a release date of 8/11/09. Just do a search for Grindhouse. Looks like it is the theater release. I may wait for blu ray complete box set like the one in Japan. Theater version plus the extended editions. I am very excited for this to finally come to blu ray. I have refused to purchase DP & PT and am very happy I waited!
