Michael Bay Talks Transformers 2 Blu-ray

Posted June 24, 2009 10:47 AM by Juan Calonge

Paramount Michael Bay has already intimated some details about the Blu-ray edition of 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen'. It's going to have "lots of stuff" and is being produced by "Ridley Scott's DVD guy" – in other words, the extraordinary Charlie de Lauzirika. Bay also confirmed that the BD version will have variable aspect ratio for the scenes shot in IMAX, like 'The Dark Knight' did.

"We're going to do a special IMAX SKU," said Bay, "where it'll open up for those scenes. You can see top to bottom."

Can't wait, the IMAX scenes on the Dark Knight are still some of the best I've seen on Blu.

I really like Michael Bay. Not ashamed to admit it. I even loved THE ISLAND and fournd PEARL HARBOR to be beautifully shot.

"Ugh.. I'd rather they just stick to one aspect ratio."

Well, I sort of would, too, though I also want the movie presented as intended.

What I mean is this... Since at this point this movie has been made with these varying aspect ratios, then that is how I want it to appear on the Blu-Ray edition to maintain the original integrity.

Having said that, if they are going to be making movies this way, with only certain segments filmed in IMAX, it would be nice if they shot the other scenes in a matching aspect ratio in the first place, so that the movie can be consistent in that respect. I don't see the reason or need to go out of one's way to make the thing more than one ratio in the first place.

But, right now I look at this particular movie as "what's done is done", and I would like it presented accurately on the Blu-Ray as it currently exists.

I honestly don't know what the big deal is about the "variable aspect ratio". If it's just like "The Dark Knight", then great. Watching it on a 60-inch HDTV, I couldn't tell a difference at all between the aspect ratios. The picture looked amazing. I don't think it's going to be that noticeable, if at all, when people pop it in their blu-ray player. Could anybody tell with "Dark Knight"? But that's just my two cents.

i wasn't sure about this, but i guess they did actually film some scenes in IMAX? It wasn't just re-formatted for IMAX screens, right?

I'd keep my expectations in check. The reviews for Transformers 2 have been brutal, and if that's the case who cares what extras the blu ray will have.

After seeing the film last night I can't wait to see it on Blu-ray. The PQ and SQ should be absolutely amazing.

You're right thekobrakais, there were three action scenes filmed specifically in the IMAX format - but with a movie like "Transformers", who knows what particular action scenes where filmed. But I do like the fact that anybody watching it in IMAX gets more footage put into the movie than watching the regular theatrical version. Hopefully, the blu-ray will have the IMAX version or both for that matter.

WHy not just shoot the whole movie in IMAX? Imagine an entire Michael Bay movie looking as good as Baraka?

Pretty soon, we're going to be shooting full movies with IMAx cameras. Just look at how The Dark Knight looks on Blu Ray with the IMAX scenes. It looks incredible!! I want all movies to look that good and fill up the screen. It's only a matter of time before we get to that point.

I don't get IMAX presentations on BD. The whole point of IMAX is the size and the scale. You don't get that at home, regardless of your screen size. Transfering IMAX to BD merely turns bits of the movie into 1.85:1!

Although fair enough, it's true that the movie should be presented the way it was shot. I'd be more interested in a branching version that allows you to watch "basic" theatrical or "IMAX" theatrical.

But then again, if Transformers 2 is crap I ain't buying it!

"WHy not just shoot the whole movie in IMAX? Imagine an entire Michael Bay movie looking as good as Baraka?"

There's actually a lot of limitations with IMAX cameras. Michael Bay's movies have a very chaotic style to them with lots of fast cuts and tons of action with cameras shaking and whatnot. Puting that on an IMAX screen would basically kill the audience.

"You're right thekobrakais, there were three action scenes filmed specifically in the IMAX format - but with a movie like "Transformers", who knows what particular action scenes where filmed. I don't know if there's extra scenes in the IMAX version or just some scenes (3) were filmed with the cameras.

@Jones Effect

You couldn't tell a difference?? You didn't notice the black bars going away when the aspect ratio changes? You couldn't see a picture quality difference? Wow.....
