Paramount in Talks with Fox and Sony for Home Entertainment Merger

Posted July 1, 2009 06:21 AM by Juan Calonge

Paramount Paramount Pictures is seeking to merge its home entertainment division with a rival and is in advanced talks with Sony Pictures and 20th Century Fox, according to the Financial Times. It is unclear which of the two companies will strike a deal with Paramount. None of the companies made any comment.

The negotiations have focused on combining disc production, distribution and back-office functions. One proposal would involve Paramount having its discs manufactured at Sony DADC rather than at Technicolor as it does now. The merger would result in considerable savings for Paramount at a time where home video sales are slumping and the studios find it increasingly hard to finance their film production.

Outward operation - including marketing and sales – would remain separate.

I can't access the article, does it mention anything about the transfer or retention of mastering of movies for HE?

nhaase - The article doesn't discuss that aspect. It's not a very lengthy piece.

yeah I don't care where they get the discs made as long as the bit rates stay high, and the standards also.

I hope that Sony will merge with them. Hopefully they can do that and work a deal for Marvel to get Spider-Man back, you know because Marvel works with Paramount.

Since Sony already handed off MGM's home video distribution to Fox, I don't see why they would pick up Paramount's home video.
