Casablanca Regular Blu-ray Edition Coming Up

Posted July 10, 2009 04:52 AM by Juan Calonge

Warner Bros. An early announcement to retailers indicates that Warner Home Video is set to re-release 'Casablanca' on a regular edition Blu-ray on September 15. So far this great classic had only been available in the US as part of a two-disc Ultimate Collector's Edition (with special packaging and bundled memorabilia), released in December 2008 with a list price of $64.99.

In contrast with that, this upcoming edition will have an MSRP of $28.99. It will only have one disc and hence will not include the documentary "Jack L. Warner: The Last Mogul" contained in the Ultimate Collector's Edition.

Excellent news. Not everyone wants the fluff. So we should expect a regular edition of Wizard of Oz in the future?

Finally! I have been holding out for this rather than the box with all the cardboard extras and the additional price tag.

Whichever studio has the rights to CITIZEN KANE, are they going to include a cardboard replica of the, you know, major plot device? For only $68 list price!

"So we should expect a regular edition of Wizard of Oz in the future?"

I guess so - if you can wait a year!

Ditto all of the above!
How about a regular edition Woodstock, etc...

Just sold my UCE on the trading forum for a low $29 hoping that soon I would be able to have a regular edition that actually fits on my BD shelf. Didn't know it would be this soon. Excellent!

hendersd - Wal-Mart sells an exclusive regular edition of Woodstock for $28.99. I have seen it in-store. It's in a regular case. No fluff.

Make me wonder is this what us Red2blu customers who upgraded our HD-DVD's months ago who are still waiting for our Casablanca's gonna get after we were promised the Ultimate Edition?! HMM

Finally! And with the news of amadeus, it seems that all those pesky digibooks will get rereleased sooner or later as well.

Finally! There no way I was going to spend $40 for the "collector's edition".

It's about time. I really did not want that big box set.

GregBlu5 - I don't know what will be in it, but WB owns the U.S. rights to Citizen Kane, so expect a box full o' swag whenever it hits Blu, just like Casablanca (and The Wizard of Oz and GWTW). Maybe not a cardboard sleigh to throw in the ol' fireplace, but perhaps a snowglobe that whispers "Rosebud"?

(Edit: Now the question is, do I trade in my Casablanca swagbox for this version to make room on my shelf for the GWTW swagbox?)

Yes, about time. I would hope hat at least the single disc will have as many features as the DVD release.

I'm hoping and expecting the same thing for Wizard of Oz. I refuse to buy the $60 Oz version.

Warner has the rights for Citizen Kane, as far as I know. I had a chance to attend a seminar given by cinematographer Gary Graver, regarding the transfer to video of the restored negative, which is contained in the DVD edition that I and most people own.

There were criticisms by Mr. Graver of too much contrast in that transfer. It is expected that Warner will listen to people like him and correct the transfer when the Blu-Ray disc comes out, at least I for one who personally hopes so!

BTW, Regular editions of special editions are welcome, but depending on the film in question, not at the expense of trading off documentaries and extras. This means that I will be skipping this one and sticking to the special edition in my wish list.

That's great news; I've been holding off on Casablanca because of the oversized (and pricey) ultimate edition. This, I'll be getting
