Paramount Home Entertainment and Universal Home Entertainment have each announced plans on how they will merge future Blu-ray releases into the ever-growing iPhone world. For the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Star Trek: The Original Series - Season 2', Paramount will allow iPhone owners to download exclusive content as well as use their devise as a remote control. They have named this feature "Mobile Blu", a term, we predict, you will be hearing much more about in the future.
Universal is taking it a step further with the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Fast & Furious, which is due to hit store shelves next week. On this release, iPhone (and iPod Touch) users will be able to control the "Virtual Car Garage" feature, including rotating 360 views of cars featured in the film, and instantly view detailed information about the rides.
Future Universal films will introduce even more interactivity, enabling viewers to view and download exclusive bonus content on their iPhones, use their phone as a remote control, and even gain detailed information regarding the film and its stars in real time.
The Universal release requires an App (which will be available on Apple's App Store soon). The disc will also allow connectivity with viewer's Facebook and Twitter accounts.

I don't agree with this. If I buy a Blu-ray with BDlive, I should be able to access any special features, with or without an iphone, after all I have spent my money buying the movie. I am assuming there is Apple money involved. I think if this becomes a regular thing, it is only going to hurt the format and anger people without an Iphone. I think this is a bad road to take. |

What a load of rubbish, talk about turning on the consumer that helped blu ray win the format war.
If studios advertise blu rays as exclusive content available to iphone users, I will not buy the blu ray, it will be that simple, I am not going to put my hard earned cash into a blu ray that I cannot gain full access to.
Stupid move of the year, this is nearly as bad as dolby digital on blu ray. |

Totally agree with mntwister! If I buy a movie I should also get all the special features associated with it. I even have a 2nd gen touch but this news still pisses me off. I also bet it won't even be compatible with my touch, but only with the iphones. I'm also sick and tired of this kinda crap. I wish they would chunk all this extra useless crap and just focus on getting more movies out and quit worrying about dinky features like this and worry about maximizing PQ and AQ! Between this kinda stuff and all the compatibility issues with players and disc for the first time I am starting to worry about blu-ray. |

While I don't agree with exclusive content being made available to iphone user's alone, it should be made available to everyone through different types of media regardless of type of phone you own.
I've got to admit I've been waiting for an app that can control Blu-Ray to come out on the iphone for a while now so I'll be happy to try this when it comes out.
In response to mntwister hate to say it but it's not Apple throwing cash at this, it will be people like me willing to buy the app off of the app store as I cant see Universal or Paramount giving this kind of thing away free. |

I don't have an Iphone and my 2008 Sony laptop doesn't support BD Live...so I guess blu-ray is just going to be a little less fun for me. |

Actually, the app used for the Paramount Star Trek release will be free (Mobile Blue). It is also planned to make it available on Palm and Android devices in the future. It's not meant to be iPhone/Touch exclusive, it's just that the iPhone side of it was developed first. |

Ok, aside from those not liking this for the exclusive content, lets say it will work as a remote in some non-exclusive cases, how does the iPhone (iPod touch) talk to the BD player for this? BD player has no Wifi or Blue-tooth?
Thanks. |

It will only work on a player connected to a WiFi hub. The disc also has to have an application on it to accept commands from the phone, so it will only work with discs designed with the application in mind. |

If it expands the Blu-ray user base then I'm all for it. More sales = better features, better hardware, lower cost content and players. |

How many of you guys really go through every extra on the disc anyways?
Other than the curiosity of using an iphone as a remote for interactive controls, the extras discussed aren't even any good. Look at a car from a different angle? woooo, excitement. I can't believe you guys would not buy a movie simply because you can't access all the available content.
I buy a movie to watch the movie. I could care less about this stuff. |

I think it is a neat bonus for iphone users. I wonder how the remote will work with the ps3? |

I bought a NUON DVD player because it unlocked special stuff. The stuff it unlocked was garbage. I'm sure this is the same. |

Guess it sucks not to have an iphone, hunh?
On a serious note though everyone, the iphone is crazy better than any cell phone ever to date, and an explosion of new ways to look at media and tech. I'd consider Blu-ray, Universal and Paramont stupid if they DIDN'T think of this... |

I do have an iPhone, but I would not buy or not buy a BD because of such features. It sounds like an interesting offering, however, I thought the same thing about BD-Live. That's been a big disappointment. I have yet to find any valuable content on BD-Live. I hope they eventually develop something worthwhile. Until then, I'm not holding my breath. |
