Watchmen Breaks BD Share Record with 36% Ratio

Posted July 30, 2009 07:02 AM by Juan Calonge

Blu-ray Movies As we reported on our previous post, a full 36 percent of disc sales of Warner's 'Watchmen' have been on Blu-ray. This is a record-breaking figure, even for action movies. For example, back in September 2008, 'Iron Man' got "only" 17% of its sales from Blu-ray. The previous BD percentage record was for 'Quantum of Solace', released March 24, 2009, which got 28%.

This feat is all the more remarkable if we consider that the DVD had both one- and two-disc editions, and that an Ultimate Collector's Edition Blu- ray has been announced for later this year.

Probably the result when multiple stores sell a big name brand new release title for $20... How much was Iron Man and QOS selling for on release day?...

The record will fall countless times in the 3rd and 4th quarters for sure!

What with these titles due by years end:

Star Trek
Transformers 2
Harry Potter 6
UP

I don't think I've missed anything, but someone will surely add to that list if I haved missed something

I dont think youll see Harry Potter, Up or Angels and Demons break this record. They have too much mass appeal, and the masses dont have blu-ray yet

LOTR will break all this easily. Gladiator, Braveheart have a good chance as well.

If Quantum of Solace break a record in its release day on BD ,Angels and Demons is not far away.

But i can see now Transformers 2 and Star Trek is going to reach 50 percent in Quarter 4.

I'm glad to see people are finally catching onto how great this film was. I'm tired of hearing people complain it was a ripoff of Heroes (which itself is a ripoff of about a dozen other things anyway) or The Incredibles.

I don't suspect Terminator: Salvation will make half as much on blu, but Star Trek and Up might. Either film was better received than Potter 6 (of which I've heard mostly lukewarm reviews) or Terminator 4 (which I loved but am in the minority).

Great news! Though records are made to be broken, and this is one record I hope is broken over and over again!

I'm proud to be in that statistic. Especially since I bought the Amazon Special Edition.

Seems like everyone is just hating on Watchmen saying that every other movie is going to beat it...I'm sure as more people dive into the Blu there will be a movie that beats this record. Just be happy that we are seeing this type of thing when Blu-Ray is still in its early stages...who cares if it's a movie you don't particularly like.

- What? I've never even heard of Angels and Demons. Is that some Christopher Walken movie?

So now that the blu ray big wigs see that a price near or under $20 (I paid $17) for a new relsease yields such a high share ratio, i'm hoping we'll continue to see lower prices on all blus.

I knew this movie was going to bring good numbers, but 36%?!?!?!?!?!

I wonder if this is a combination of a reasonable release price and lack of popular appeal. If it would have been very popular (like iron man), many people would be buying it on dvd (because most people do not have a blu player), which would drive the bd share down.

bfellow -> 'Angels & Demons' is the sequel to 'The DaVinci Code.'

WTFBBQ -> Great point about the popularity of the film. I agree that the share % would have been far less had it been massively popular. I'd like to have unit sale numbers of all titles mentioned in the article before getting overly impressed with the percentages.

This is the proof needed to show the studios and the BDA that the price for Bu-ray movies is too expensive ($28 typical street pricing for new releases).

If the prices are adjusted to $20 new releases and $15 catalog releases as a standard then Blu-ray will continue to catch up to DVD sales. Blu-ray should be at 40% to 50% of DVD sales by now.

Sony should be embarrassed to release A River Runs Through It for $28 Amazon price (digibook or not).

only Transformers 2 can break. it'll have IMAX scenes. I would WANT star trek to break it but it's not likely, watchmen was kinda like dark knight good bd reviews and it was one of the biggest movies this year

GoodToGo -> "LOTR will break all this easily. Gladiator, Braveheart have a good chance as well"

LOTR, Gladiator, Braveheart and other previous releases are completely IRRELEVANT to the share between BD and DVD and DO NOT COUNT. Why? Because they were previously released (duh), which means the sales figures when released on BD do not compete (directly) to DVD. The true share of BD to DVD can only be made on new, same day releases.
