Slim PS3 Officially Announced

Posted August 18, 2009 01:37 PM by Juan Calonge

PlayStation 3 slim To quote Chazz Palminteri on 'The Usual Suspects': "a rumor's not a rumor that doesn't die." Today at the gamescom conference in Cologne, Germany, SCEI chief Kaz Hirai officially announced the Slim PS3, available in stores from the first week of September. Price will be $299 in the US, €299 in Europe, £249 in the UK and ¥29,980 in Japan.

The US version can be Pre-ordered Now From Amazon.com.

The UK version can be Pre-ordered Now From Amazon.co.uk.

The "classic" PS3 and the slim PS3, side by side.

Features and connections are the same as on existing models. It'll include a 120GB hard drive (upgradeable).

According to SCE, the internal design architecture of the new PS3 system, from the main semiconductors and power supply unit to the cooling mechanism, has been completely redesigned.

Size, weight and energy requirements are cut by a third. Dimensions are 290×65×290 mm (11.4×2.6×11.4 in). Weight is 3.2 kg (7.0 lbs). Power consumption is approximately 250W. Noise is also reduced, although no specific figure was given.

As regards the outside look, the form factor of the new PS3 system features a new design with textured surface finish (in charcoal black vs the piano black finish on previous models), giving "an all new impression and a casual look," which the company hopes "will appeal to a wider audience."

With the introduction of the new PS3 system, SCE will also reduce the price of the current PS3 with 80GB HDD to an RRP of US$299/€299. Also in North America, the price of PS3 with 160GB HDD will be reduced to an RRP of US$399 from August 18.

Whoa! I never saw this coming!

Still...exciting news. Will eventually pick one up (still crossing my fingers for a Dell 15% off coupon or something).

EDIT: Once I see some official pics I may have to go pick up a current model at the 299 price if the slim is as ugly as some of the leaks.

On the ps3 I read a comment that says no Bitstream is this important? Is it something the ps3 lacks that my blu ray player has? Thanks for any help given.

Amazing news. I was certain the whole thing was a ruse. I'm glad I was wrong. I can't wait to see the Blu ray numbers come holiday time, especially with the LOTR trilogy in Nov.

Price drop is great news. Hopefully this will help Sony get the sales they deserve for the PS3 (one of the best pieces of hardware I've owned).

I think I prefer the "button-less" eject and on/off of the original. Otherwise, $299 is great.

It does look like a pool kickboard for kids. LOL! Not a fan of the hard buttons for eject and power either. Might be slimmer, but it looks wider than Harry Knowles!

To people commenting on push buttons..... I don't think they're push buttons. I just think the on/off and eject 'buttons' are textured differently. I'm pretty sure it will still be touch sensitive.

Having push buttons would actually make it thicker (vs touch sensitive 'buttons').

On the fat, non-slim ps3's, those the on/off and eject 'buttons' are also textured differently.

No wonder they can charge 299, it looks cheap too. Looking forward to checking it out in person though before I find some bargain on it in the next month or so.
