Rumor: Back to the Future, Jurassic Park on BD in 2010

Posted August 28, 2009 08:42 AM by Juan Calonge

Universal StudiosTwo of the most requested film franchises might be on Blu-ray soon (or rather, not so soon). Cinema site Nuke The Fridge (sic) claims that it has learned from an "inside source at Universal" that both the 'Back to the Future' and 'Jurassic Park' trilogies will be released on Blu-ray in October or November of next year. Of course, this is totally unofficial.

Thanks to forum member Wdm81 for posting this on our forum.

Ok so I am guessing JAWS will be in Blu Ray just in time for the world to end in 2012...We get tons of garbage on Blu Ray but they make us wait forever to get the movies we really want. Good Job Universal and Spielberg way to be there for your fans.

I'd heard about that BTTF rumor a while back over at BTTF.com so I think it's safe to assume it's definitely coming as they have been spot on in the past about their insider sources. Can't wait; one of my top ten most wanted movies on Blu!!

These are definitely two very highly anticipated franchises on Blu, but the MOST anticipated? That entitlement goes to the original STAR WARS and INDIANA JONES trilogies. But don't get me wrong - BTTF and JP are at the top of my must have now list...and Universal's reputation for producing incredible looking and sounding Blu-rays only makes this anticipation all the more giddy!!

Of course, we still WON'T see any of the Eric Stoltz footage...oh well, I'm still ecstatic!!

 - Aug 28, 2009

At least it sounds like they haven't forgotten about those classics.

It is ridiculous the amount of time they are taking to release those, along with star wars, indiana jones and basically all the Spielberg classics.

They better be reference quality transfers!

Must admit I almost jumped of my chair when I read that headline - finding out they were talking about next year was a real bummer…

I hate that studios are forcing us to buy the inferior sequels. I'd like if Back to the Future & Jurassic Park get individual releases b/c frankly the rest of the JP films suck and though I like Back to the Future 2 I don't like it enough to buy it again on Blu-ray.

Wdm81
 - Aug 28, 2009

Vote plusVote minus

The year wait does suck but its not really that long, i mean we've waited longer before and even when these come out we'll still be waiting for star wars... lessor of two evils i guess besides now I have a year to save up cause i'm getting all 6 regardless of whether they come in a box set or individually (i like the last 2 JP movies)

It would be nice to get some kind of official announcment though

Back to the Future is a day one buy. The first Jurassic Park was fun when it came out (and the others were always horrible) but I can't even stand to watch the first anymore. Outside of Indiana Jones there is nothing of Spielberg's I'm interested in on Blu-ray.

One thing is certain about the JP set - they better have a great tribute to Michael Crichton! I can't tell you how much I've loved that man's books! Yes, he was an outspoken denyer of global warming, which really turned me off, but still can't tell you how great this man's books were...my personal favorite still being TIMELINE. Too bad Donner's film version blew!

Would also love to see films Crichton directed as well on Blu someday soon like LOOKER and WESTWORLD!

BTTF makes sense in 2010 as it will be the 25th anniversary since the release of the original film. Universal would be wise to take advantage of this, from a marketing standpoint.

These are two top notch franchises(alright well, JP1 was great, the 2nd was terrible, and the 3rd was acceptable...but we're kidding ourselves if we think they're going to release them invidually), it's really frustrating that it's going to be another year until we see either of them.

Of course, it'll probably be another 5 years until we see the Star Wars movies released, so it could be worse.

Back to The Future is a definite. I hope for Jurassic Park they have both the set and seperate like Universal did The Fast and Furious. I am not a big fan of The Lost World especially after reading the fantastic book. The first one was great, Second one was a cash cow and the only scene I would like to see in high def would be were the T-Rex is knocking the trailer off the cliff, and third was a lot better then the second, but maybe a pick up down the road if cheap enough.

Weren't they already rumored to release the same time this year? I know they're waiting on both Spielberg and Lucas to be totally satisfied, but for that reason I don't think either of these will release until 2011.

Watching the BTTF trilogy in HD on Comcast On-Demand looked great. And that's including the compression and artifacts that come with the cable signal. Watching this trilogy on Blu-ray would make me blow my jigawatts.

I own JP1 and JP2 on DVD and didn't like JP3 enough to buy it. I'll probably replace JP1 with a blu-ray version, but didn't enjoy JP2 enough to upgrade.

I just hope the special effects still hold up for Back to the Future. They were awesome at the time, but I'm worried that the clarity will enhance the flaws - as was the case for Die Hard. At worst, I guess they could pull a George Lucas and redo the special effects to be crappier.
