Buster Keaton's The General Blu-ray for November

Posted September 2, 2009 05:20 AM by Juan Calonge

Kino International Kino Video is set to release Buster Keaton's silent-cinema masterpiece 'The General' on Blu-ray on November 10, making it the first silent feature film on BD in America (although the absolute record is for the UK release of 'Sunrise', which comes out September 21). This release has been mastered from a 35mm archive print struck from the original camera negative.

On the audio side, three different musical scores will be available: music composed and conducted by Carl Davis, performed by The Thames Silents Orchestra (in 5.1 or 2.0); music arranged and directed by Robert Israel; and theatre organ score by Lee Erwin.

Special features include:
  • A video tour of the authentic General, presented in association with The Southern Museum
  • A tour of the filming locations, presented by John Bengtson, author of Silent Echoes
  • Behind-the-scenes home movie footage
  • Filmed introduction by Gloria Swanson
  • Filmed introduction by Orson Welles
  • “The Buster Express,” a brisk montage of train gags from throughout Keaton's Carreer

Just because it's a silent film does not mean we don't expect lossless audio

Best Blu-ray news of the summer! One of my favorite films.

And whatever happened to that Metropolis restoration / blu-ray release we heard about last year?

Awesome news! Kino is THE distributor for silent pictures. Now bring on The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Nosferatu and Metropolis

Great news. I can't wait to see how it holds up, though I believed it'll look great. I'm hoping for some Chaplin soon.

What a treat! I've seen this on the big screen in revival houses a few times through the years. Keaton was an absolute genius.

This is good news, I have Sunrise on pre order. Metropolis has been put back until Q1/2 2010 for a very good reason, a lost print of the full version of the film has been found in a museum vault in South America. Amazing news.

Awesome! Anything that prompts a restoration of these deteriorating movies is a good thing.

Keaton's body of work pales a bit in comparison to Chaplin, but the General is as good as anything Chaplin ever did.

I'd like to see Joan of Arc on Blu-ray. Metropolis would be good too, as would Wings.
