Wolverine Blu-ray Gets Retailer Exclusives, Barcodes

Posted September 15, 2009 10:12 AM by Juan Calonge

Blu-ray Movies The retailers are again playing the Blu-ray exclusives game, this time with 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine', which streets today. Wal-Mart is selling an exclusive BD/DVD combo release; Best Buy, in turn, has a 'gift set with a Wolverine bust'. Meanwhile, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment and JAGTAG have announced the launch of "the first viable Twitter integration from a 2-D barcode" tied to the Wolverine launch, allowing consumers to tweet with 2-D barcodes, sharing exclusive video content from the movie with their friends and followers.

The Best Buy exclusive gift set

Consumers can take pictures of JAGTAGs in Twitter clients such as Tweetie, Twitterberry or TwitterFon and tweet them to @524824. They then receive tweets back with URLs that link to high resolution images, long length audio and video, or traditional WAP sites. Consumers can easily re-tweet content to their followers to share what they feel is most valuable.
"Leveraging social networking capabilities allows us to extend the reach and more importantly connect with users to create interactivity via an ongoing dialog," said Mary Daily, Executive Vice President, Marketing Fox Home Entertainment.

"Entertainment marketers are looking to maximize the effectiveness of their campaigns and find new ways to engage consumers with targeted content they want on the go, and JAGTAG's work with Fox Home Entertainment lives up to that goal," explains Ken Graffeo, Business Development Executive, JAGTAG (formerly of Universal Studios Home Entertainment and the HD DVD Promotion Group, and then of Summit Entertainment). "JAGTAG continues to meet the changing market demand for highly customized mobile campaigns that offer consumers relevant and timely information to get more movie fans watching."

First, wow, Ken G. found a job. Amazing. Second, WTF? Oh yeah, I want to go through tons of effort and twittering to get images and such. Uh, no. If lots of people aren't even using the free digital copy that comes with their discs, how many are gonna go through the effort for this? Sounds like a total waste of time.

How would Twitter make the movie better? Can't you tweet about the movie if you buy it from anywhere else? Twitter is a ridiculous fad anyway.

The twitter thing is just plain stupid... but then so is Twitter and the twits who tweet.

I just want the best possible AV in my blurays, not hype and gimmicks or some cheesy wolverine bust to collect dust. Reminds me of the LOTR boxsets with the rubber Gollum bust - the ones that I saw floating around the clearance outlets for years and years afterwards

Twitting is just as cool as arguing which version of Lord of The Rings or Star Wars the original trilogy they should release on the internet.

I guess there's a market for everything. I just want the best image, sound and extras avaiable. Love the making ofs when they are actually good. Things like busts and statues... well... they are nice and sometimes, when I really like the movie, I usually go for it. I did it with DARK KNIGHT (Amazon edition), HELLBOY 1 (on DVD) and 2, WATCHMEN (Amazon edition), IRON MAN (mask edition), CASABLANCA, DIRTY HARRY collection... and will sure do it with STAR TREK and UP. But movies I didn't really love (like WANTED and TWILIGHT) I'll settle for the standard edition. I just don't see the point of having pictures and post cards of a movie I didn't really care about.

I concur with most comments posted here.

Twitter? pfft.

I don't think I would pay extra for a bust unless I was a die hard fan. Even then, I'm not sure I understand how the bust relates to the movie or enhances it.

Just picked up the Walmart 3 Disc version. They had it for $24.xx Online is $26.xx. Paid the few extra cents over the Best Buy price so I can have the DVD included for use on portable DVD players.

I hate when they do this retailer exclusive stuff. Even worse when they don't advertise it, like bonus tracks on CDs.

wow. 20th century is really banking on the geek turn out for this over-sized turkey. This movie just didn't convince me to care a lick about the whole story and the idea of purchase has been far from my radar since I walked out of the bijou those many months ago.

Good luck to them though.

"the first viable Twitter integration from a 2-D barcode"....."take pictures of JAGTAGs..."

What the hell does this mean? What are they talking about it?

All I care about is digital copy... busts and especially twitter are just garbage making the BD cost more for the rest of us.
