The Third Man Criterion Blu-ray Going Out of Print (Update)

Posted October 29, 2009 03:06 PM by Juan Calonge

Criterion We have the first discontinued Criterion BD before us. Both the DVD and Blu-ray editions of the classic movie 'The Third Man' are listed on the Criterion Collection site as out-of-print. Hence, the only available copies will be those already in the retail channel.

When that dries up, expect this title to become increasingly harder to find from private sellers - and expensive. As this is a widely acclaimed major movie (featured in the American Film Institute's "100 years... 100 movies" list), with a great Blu-ray release, you should run, not walk, towards a retailer or etailer and secure your copy if you don't have one by now.

Update On Amazon, 'The Third Man' now can only bought on the marketplace from third-party sellers. However, other retailers still have it in stock, including Barnes and Noble, Best Buy, Deep Discount and DVD Pacific.

. For more information see the Criterion The Third Man forum discussion.

It's definitely very healthy to live in the past like that, and also their blu ray prices are incredibly reasonable and cheaper than their dvd's...so in essence, you've done no research and posted something useless...thankyou

I own this Blu and recommend that anyone interested in classic films pick it up before its gone.

Oh well,... I read some reviews and went ahead and bought it from amazon.

(Even though I have other stuff I wanted to pick up today.)

I sold my out of print Criterion DVD release of Passolini's Salo with the original white ring at the centre of the disc (those who care know what I'm talking about) for well over $400.00 on eBay.

So maybe I'll be getting this...

I have been pondering on whether to buy the blu ray and sell my DVD... I guess this is the moment of the truth...

Thank God I bought this during the big Criterion sale at Barnes and Noble!

I second that, the Barnes and Noble sale was great!

Amen to that. With all the new Criterion releases around, let's hope B and N get another one going sometime soon.

The only reason it is going out of print is because they are replacing it with a hard plastic case version. It will not be fetching OOP money, so no need to scalp them off. Criterion is starting to replace all of the original slipcover ones with hard-case replacements, and they have also initiated a case replacement program for those who would like to keep theirs and just replace the case for uniformity. Hope that clears up some of the confusion.

rich, thanks for the update. I was about to stock up on what Blu copies I could and try selling them for a profit on Amzon, but now that I know that, no need to do so. Glad to see Criterion is going the "hard case" route on future releases.

TTC1984 - not true.

Both the Criterion DVD and Blu-ray are going out of print. Criterion has lost their rights to the film. The plastic replacement case has nothing to do with this announcement.

I've heard both stories, and I figured "losing the rights" would be more severe than the plastic case thing. Thanks for the heads up, I might better see if I can't hunt down some last-minute copies just to be safe.

I just blind-bought it from Amazon. I was thinking of getting it during Deep Discount's Black Friday sale (25% off) but with this out of print development, I figured I should get it ASAP. I also bought Unforgiven, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Interview With The Vampire. Total came out to $51.96 or $12.99 per movie. Lots of really good deals going on right now!

Either way, the original case it came with could be worth something. Those aren't as sturdy as the hard plastic cases and it could become increasingly rare to find one in good shape over time.

How could they lose the rights? Somebody else bought them? It seems something strange... More so if the blu-ray was recently released.

Maybe it has to do with the talk of a remake?
