France: BD Revenues Double, Offset DVD's Fall

Posted November 2, 2009 04:00 AM by Juan Calonge

Blu-ray Movies According to data gathered by GFK and released by the Centre National du Cinéma (CNC), revenues from sale of Blu-ray software in France from January to September 2009 were 64.42 million euros, which represents a growth of 127.3% over the same period in 2008. BD more than made up for the loss in DVD – overall revenue from physical video supports was up 1.6% year-on-year.

Market share for Blu-ray is now 7.5% of total packaged-media revenue. Units sold were 2.98 million, up 156.1% year-on-year.

It's getting better, but we're not quite still there. As long as you'll find ads for "this movie now on DVD and Blu-ray DVD", you'll have a hard time making people understand that BD is an entirely different beast.

In my social circle, I'm the only one with a BD player (incidentally, a PS3). I still have people around me, parents and friends, who ask me why I don't buy DVDs anymore. Most of them simply don't "get" the point of BD when they're perfectly happy with upscaled DVDs. The irony is that all of them had a HD screen long before I needed one for my PS3...

Yeah, we are a long way off...Some people don't care about picture quality so much, which is to say they are not videophiles... When people moved from VHS to DVD, that was less about PQ, and more about moving with the times - they had already seen the cassette to CD move in music, so against that background, moving from VHS to DVD was just the thing to do... DVD in the blu-ray age will have more market share than VHS did in the DVD world... VHS was more obviously outmoded, but for people who aren't videophiles, DVD isn't outmoded...
