Troma Goes Blu in 2010

Posted November 2, 2009 06:35 AM by Juan Calonge

Blu-ray Movies Troma Entertainment founder Lloyd Kaufman has announced that, starting January 2010, the veteran low-budget horror studio will release one title from its catalog on Blu-ray every month. No slate has been detailed, but unofficial information has it that the February release will be 'Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead'.

Toxic Avenger 1-4, Tromeo & Juliet, Class of Nuke 'em High trilogy etc. They do have the rights to some independent movies as well (movies they've acquired and/or distributed at some time) but I expect their in-house productions to get first priority.

Whoohooo!!! I cant wait for them to release the original Toxic Avenger. Chances are it wont look any better than the DVD (lets face it as low budget as most their films are, they wouldnt have the money to go back and do a restoration) but the fact I could say I have some of the Troma masterpieces on blu is enough. Ohh yeah, I hope they dont forget to release "Redneck Zombies" =D

Toxie is their baby. So A) they probably wouldn't release it too soon, and B) that is one of the few releases I can see them putting money into.

C'mon guys, this is TROMA we're talking about here! If anything, they will put out VHS quality prints in 1080p, while Mr. Kaufman will do his usual schtick of "this is the remastered, director's cut in pristine high definition.. whatever that means. I know what it means! Buy this movie!"

I will wait until Bluray.com or DVDBeaver does a review, whereupon we can all see just how "progressive" his scans (or will it be scams) will be...

Most of these films will not look great but I think a handful of them (like "Tromeo & Juliet") will.

If Troma spends some money for real remastered 1080P transfers they that will be great, but I don't have very high hope for that to happen. When I got the Toxic Avenger which said it was remastered in Tormorphic Widescreen for the first time I was let down and all I got was a copy of the Letterboxed laserdisc on DVD. I'll have to wait and see some reviews before I buy any of there blu's.

Low budget? Troma Entertainment is the bottom of the barrel of film productions! High Definition, can only do so much... It's impossible to turn Razzie Award winners into Oscars whether they're HD, or not.

About 1/3 of their catalog was shot on either 16mm Film or 35mm film. I know that Poultrygeist was one of the rare title that was shot on 35mm stock. So it will be logical that this one come in the first batch

I would love The Toxic Avenger.......include all the episodes of The Toxic Crusaders cartoon as bonus features and that will be the fastest sell ever.

"Poultrygeist" is one of my favorite Troma films. So happy to see it coming to Blu-ray after the short-printed DVD.

Ha ha... This is funny. I remember when Troma had a big sale back when DVD was new and you could buy all 17 or so movies they released to DVD for about $0.47 each. A friend of mine bought the whole set. It was pretty funny.
