Universal Does Atonement for Blu-ray

Posted November 5, 2009 08:42 AM by Juan Calonge

Universal Studios In an early announcement to retailers, it has been revealed that Universal Studios Home Entertainment will release 'Atonement' on Blu-ray on January 26, 2010. No disc details are available at the moment. 'Atonement' is a drama set in pre-WWII Britain, based on a novel by Ian McEwan and starring Keira Knightley and James McAvoy. It was nominated to seven Academy Awards and won one (best music).

As a historical footnote, 'Atonement' was the last title released by Universal on HD DVD in the US.

I loved the first half.

Then it becomes hard to watch for me.

Pretty much anything with Kiera Knightley is going to end up in my collection at some point or another.

Wow. Great news. The HD DVD was and still is rare to begin with, hence expensive.

Hopefully Pride and Prejudice isn't too far behind.

I have to say that this a great movie, it's a very melodramatic story which will just make you mad and will absolutely make you hate and despise one of the characters in the movie, but it's very effective. I may buy this if the wife wants it too, because we thouroughly enjoyed it for as depressing as it was. Plus Keira is just so smoking hot!

Great cinematography, I like director Joe Wright's view thru the camera. Loved what he did with Pride & Prejudice (2005). Don't think I'll buy this one though, although beautifully shot and great acting, a sad movie.

I love "Pride and Prejudice," and for that reason I really expected to like this pretentious, meandering, utterly contrived bait-and-switch disappointment.

EVERY hackneyed film-school gimmick is employed in this "English Patient"-meets-"Roshamon"-meets-"Jacob's Ladder" -meets- "Manon des Sources" BORE. They even resort to the "have-your-seemingly-raw-ending-but-then-make-sure-everyone-leaves-the-theatre-with-an-unmotivated-bittersweet-smile-imaginary-shot-of-the-happy-lovers-probably-demanded-by-a-focus-group" device that Cameron ended "Titanic" with. Ugh.

Legitimately excellent actors and photography cannot save this fundamentally mis-constructed story and distracting directorial approach.

The best film of 2007 and possibly also the two years since.

I often think about this film and reflect on its moral meaning. I read the book.

I actually bought an HD DVD player and a copy of this movie just to watch it in HD. But I never got around to opening the boxes and eventually sold both on Ebay. But I was prepared to have HD DVD for just one film!

You can bet I will be buying it.
