Fox Adds iPhone Functions to Upcoming Blu-ray Titles

Posted November 7, 2009 12:05 PM by Josh Dreuth

20th Century Fox The upcoming 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment Blu-ray releases of 'Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian' will feature "FoxPop", a new feature that integrates a user's iPhone or computer into the movie watching experience. Once the film starts, the FoxPop feature will send movie trivia and other film information to an internet connected iPhone or computer.

For the upcoming Blu-ray release of '(500) Days of Summer', the FoxPop feature will allow users to buy music from the film through iTunes as the film is playing.

Mary Daily, executive VP of North America marketing at Fox, commented, "FoxPop furthers our commitment to providing consumers with the most exceptional home entertainment experience possible. By providing interesting movie-related information and the ability to engage with fellow Night at the Museum: Battle of Smithsonian audiences, the application creates a powerful new connection between the movie and its viewer."

Other movie studios, such as Lionsgate Home Entertainment and Anchor Bay Home Entertainment, are using BluFocus' BDTouch software to integrate viewers' iPhones into their upcoming Blu-ray releases. Upcoming titles such as Lionsgate's 'Gamer' and Anchor Bay's 'UFC: The Ultimate 100 Greatest Fights' will allow viewers to connect to their Facebook and Twitter accounts while watching the Blu-ray.

Paramount will continue to use their Mobile Blu technology to achieve similar functionality on their upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Star Trek: The Original Series - Season Three'.

The 500 Days application sound most interesting, to me. It would have been great on Woodstock, Monterrey Pop, etc.

I'm in agreement with Mushu1994. It's pointless. I don't need to be interacting between my tv and my IPhone while trying to enjoy a movie. Fox should worry about trying to making good films and not busy itself with pointless Blu ray features.

So we are gonna fu*k round on iphones instead of watching a movie.
Takes "Bring the theatre experience home" to a whole new meaning.

I love the people that whine about this stuff as if it's being forced on them... if you think it's a stupid idea, don't use it!

What they need is a feature that allows you to see "that one hot chick" topless that never gets topless in the movie. Heck I would buy an iphone for that feature

There is a lot of potential with this technology, and the chance for a lot of abuse too. These companies need to use this for entertainment more than marketing, such as trivia pop up on your iphone while the movie is playing, or exclusive free downloads to your phone (like wallpapers or ringtones). Sure having it go to iTunes to show you the music is fine, but if that is the extent of it, we are facing a group of movie makers that ran out of ideas. Facebook? Come on! I can look at facebook anytime, I don't need a movie to take me there!

Rather than put money into making a great 7.1 surround sound experience with blu-ray, they use it as a advertisement and marketing medium. We will probably have to get a firmware update to view the movie even though we don't want this feature. I just hope the stupid icon doesn't appear if I don't want care for this feature. Otherwise they can kiss my a**. I won't buy a blu-ray if the icon is there weather I want the feature or not.
