Oppo Digital is set to launch the Special Edition of its acclaimed Blu-ray player BDP-83. ESS Technology, Inc., a manufacturer of audio/video digital-to-analog converters (DACs), today announced that both its new ES9016 Sabre32 Ultra 8-channel Audio DAC and its ES9006 Premier Audio DAC will be featured in the BDP-83SE, offering increased audio performance to BD users that rely on a player's analog audio outputs.
The ES9016 Sabre32 Ultra DAC has up to 128dB dynamic range and 0.0003% (-110dB) total harmonic distortion, and is free from clock jitter common in digital audio systems. The patented circuits in the Sabre32 DAC include the 32-bit HyperStream™ modulator, capable of 100% modulation and unconditional stability, the Revolver™ Dynamic Element Matching which ensures the highest performance over an extremely wide audio dynamic range, and a Time Domain Jitter Eliminator to remove the digital jitter that causes distortion.
The ES9016 Sabre32 Ultra Audio DAC supports either 8-channel or stereo conversion from a digital audio input (up to 500kHz sampling rate) in PCM, DSD or SPDIF formats, features click-free soft mute, volume control, de-emphasis, programmable zero detect, per-channel customizable roll-off filter characteristics and consumes less than 100mW. For highest performance, the BDP-83 Special Edition's stereo output is powered by the ES9016 Sabre32 Ultra 8-channel DAC configured in Quad Differential Stereo mode, while the 7.1-channel output is powered by the ES9006 Sabre Premier 8-channel DAC.
The ES9006 Sabre Premier 8-channel DAC, with 120dB DNR and -102dB THD, was introduced in 2008 and has been prominently featured and used in many high performance Blu-ray players and other A/V equipment.
Jason Liao, CTO & VP of Product Development at Oppo Digital, said: “The Special Edition is an exciting upgrade to the original BDP-83 for the discerning audio enthusiast. The ES9016 Sabre32 Ultra DAC and the ES9006 Sabre Premier DAC combination delivers an unparalleled sound stage and incredible fidelity in both 7.1-channel and stereo modes.” The OPPO BDP-83 Special Edition is a Profile 2.0 Blu-ray player featuring bit-stream and full decoding capability for high resolution audio tracks such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Designed for both home theater viewers and music listeners, it plays DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, Super Audio CD (SACD) and standard CD in addition to Blu-ray Discs.
Robert Wong, vice-president of marketing and worldwide sales for ESS Technology, said, “We are excited that Oppo Digital has selected both the ES9016 Sabre32 Ultra DAC and the ES9006 Sabre Premier DAC for its new flagship Special Edition player. With the Sabre DACs' stunning performance and music clarity, audio enthusiasts can now get ultimate fidelity from Blu-ray movies, CDs, DVD-Audio, and SACDs that equals A/V players costing 5 to 10 times the BDP-83 Special Edition's price. ”
Update
The official page for the BDP-83SE is now up. List price is $899. It is in stock now.

Funny how people "need" wifi. I would prefer a top notch player with the money going into playback and other features that matter. My entertainment center is networked anyway for my Denon and sat box so whats another Cat cable. It is more reliable hardwired anyway. |

I am assuming this enhancement offers nothing to those that only utilize the HDMI connection. |

I agree with drago3451, lets keep the money in the real technology of the player, not in wi-fi, besides hardwired is still the best and most reliable mode of streaming data at this time. i am looking forward to this unit. perhaps this will be the thing that makes me go analog. i love the current Oppo so this one will be a welcome upgrade. i wonder will i hear improvment with my SACD's in DSD using the new unit on analog section. can't wait for the price! |

If you want the audio the best it can be, don't convert it at all!
Strange how people will pay $1200.00 for the opportunity to convert their audio signal when all they really need is an HDMI receiver which only costs like $300! |

Jesus, what happened to Oppo being an affordable BD player manufacturer. $1295, no thanks I will stick with my regular BDP-83. |

For the people who has to have WiFi, I have another solution for you if you are unable to run a Ethernet cable to your players. It's called Powerline Networking and you can use your wall power socket. It's what I'm doing with my Oppo BDP-83 and it works perfectly.
Basically it comes with 2 modules you plug in the walls. One is connected to your router, and the other to your player. |

Having killed Denon's high markup trophy case with a player inside business, OPPO is now the new Denon. They have seen the suckers and they is us. Much better to sell high margin, high end goods to status obsessed trophy hounds with high end demographics and the time and money on their hands to worry about paying triple for a 0.01278% increase in real world performance than to worry about riff-raff whining about affordablity.
Whenever a company takes this approach what it tells you is that there really isn't that much difference any longer between their product and the mass market stuff. OPPO got its start delivering affordable high end technology in a world of pretty awful DVD players and Denon charging obscene amounts for only pretty good ones. Now even $50 players are pretty good, and most of the Denon players that buyers talked about at the time (2000-2005) in the same invincible absolute terms that they now talk about the BDP-83 are either in the attic or being used as door stops. |

Only the Numark edition is $1295.00. If you move around the Numark site you will find that the "generic" Oppo SE will retail for $899.00 and can be upgraded for $400 if you send in your current Oppo BDP-83. Remember this is the NuMark page we are looking at and not the official Oppo page, which hasn't been updated yet. |

If I am reading this correctly the special ed. Oppo is only better if you use analog. Is that correct? Also. I was always under the impression that the digital HDMI connection was better than anything else currently available and that the regular Oppo offered better performance than just about anything else out there. Am I missing something? |
