RCDb Licenses BD-Live to Netflix for PS3 Streaming Disc

Posted November 10, 2009 08:18 AM by Juan Calonge

PlayStation 3 slim Related Content Database (RCDb), a provider of software and services for network-connected Blu-ray discs, announced today that it has entered a technology licensing and services agreement with Netflix, Inc. to jointly develop the instant streaming BD that enables Netflix members to instantly watch movies and TV episodes on their PS3. Netflix announced today that it has already sent 100,000 streaming discs to subscribers.

RCDb states that the Netflix instant streaming disc for PS3 represents a major technical advancement for BD-Live and the Blu-ray format. It leverages BD-Live to access the Internet and activate the Netflix user interface on the PS3 system. For details of streaming on the PS3 with the streaming disc, see blu-ray.com post of October 26.

RCDb and its partner MX Productions also provided Netflix with BD-J software development services and advanced Blu-ray format consulting.

“Netflix is dedicated to delivering a simple and elegant experience to its members,” said Netflix Vice President of Engineering Greg Peters. “The instant streaming disc for PS3 is the fastest and easiest way for Netflix members to enjoy instantly watching movies and TV episodes on the TV via the PS3. RCDb was integral in helping us deliver this experience.”

“We are excited about breaking new ground with Netflix”, said RCDb CEO Zane Vella, “Blu-ray is now mainstream and BD-Live provides an important bridge between physical discs and premium digital content distribution.”

RCDb BD-Live software powers hundreds of Blu-ray titles and enterprise class network services for leading Hollywood studios and record labels.

I got mine last Friday and the steaming quality of the movies is much better than I expected... looked really good and it was also quick to load the movies.

I have tried this out and I must say that it is much better looking that I expected. I only have a 3Mbit DSL and so far I have not had any problems with freezing, studdering etc.

Sure, it isnt as good as SD, but since I was already a Netflix member, it is free, so I can't complain. I only wish I had the BW to try out the HD selections.

I love the picture quality of the HD streams. It is pretty stunning how good it looks (considering the source).

My ONLY gripe about netflix streaming on the PS3 is that it only streams 2 audio channels (left and right). I just switched over to a fiber internet connection, and it would be nice if I could utilize my 18Mb/s download speed to get 5.1 audio instead of 2.0.

Hopefully faster broadband speeds will saturate the market, and netflix will start sending out 5.1 audio in the future.

"I only have a 3Mbit DSL and so far I have not had any problems with freezing, studdering etc... Sure, it isnt as good as SD..."

I don't believe you have enough speed to stream in HD, that's probably why you're not getting a really good picture...

I keep getting horizontal streaks in the picture, and the HD content is a little fuzzy on top of the streaks. This is doing WiFi over my crappy Verizon WiFi router. Soon I'm gonna hardwire my PS3 so hopefully it wont be too much of an issue!

I have been totally impressed with the picture quality using the PS3 to stream. I have my PC hooked up to my TV also, and have used it in the past for Netflix streaming, but I believe the picture to be a bit better through the PS3. And I absolutely LOVE the interface using the disc. It's like going to the movie store and browsing the racks of movies (which I haven't done in a few years, thanks to Netflix). This is yet another reason for me to love the PS3!

I have both a Tivo Series 3 and a PS3. The Netfliz streaming on both is comparable. The only difference is my preference on the Tivo presentation of the Instant Queue; otherwise, quality is the same.

I got my disc Friday and I watched two movies over the weekend and browsed at a few others. I'm impressed with the picture quality as well! Much better than I expected. The HD streams seem comparable to DVD quality, though the sound is only stereo, as others have mentioned. This seems like a very feasible way to catch up on TV shows, etc. My preference for favorite movies will remain Blu-rays, but this is so convenient! I'm glad to have it.

I was quite impressed by the quality of the one movie that I've watched to date. What movies are available as HD streams?

If I could only shut off Pay-Per-View on our DirecTV and substitute it with this! Can't wait to try it out on our PS3!

Can anyone comment if the video is better quality than with using the Roku?

Streaming quality is decent. What I don't understand is why can't the application be installed to the ps3 so we don't have to insert a disc every time.... There is, after all, plenty of hard drive space, and streaming couldn't take up that much space considering they do it over a web browser. I think I'll probably skip to tivo or xbox streaming so I don't have to deal with the disk.

I was noticing some audio sync issues with HD content (on the PS3) that I wasn't seeing with Netflix on Tivo Series 3. The SD is about the same between Tivo and PS3. Though I think the menu system is better on the PS3.

I've watched 3 movies with the disc so far, no complaints yet! Interface works well, nice and easy to use.

@Arr MiHardies... They can't install software for Netflix on the PS3 because Xbox has exclusive rights as a gaming console with them. The disc uses BD-Live to get around some legal issues.
