Universal Announces Blu-ray iPhone App

Posted November 11, 2009 11:58 AM by Josh Dreuth

Universal Studios On the heels of a similar announcement by Fox, Universal has announced two new iPhone and social network applications that will be featured on upcoming Blu-ray releases. Pocket Blu, which is available as a free download on iTunes, gives viewers access to a remote control, keyboard, Video Timeline, and exclusive Mobile-To-Go content right on their iPhone.

Using the viewer's iPhone and WiFi network, the app connects to any networked Blu-ray Disc player to deliver exclusive bonus content. Similar to other Blu-ray iPhone apps, they can also be used on an iPod Touch.

Social Blu, the second application announced today, allows users to integrate Twitter and Facebook into their Blu-ray experience. Viewer's will be able to update their profile status, rate movies, and send messages to friends all through their Blu-ray Disc players.

The first title to use Pocket Blu will be the upcoming Blu-ray release of 'Bruno', which is currently scheduled to hit store shelves on November 17th.

hmm.... not that this isn't great on many levels, it seems like this may have an issue with PS3 systems, right?

THANK GOD! Using the actual player remote seems so wasteful. It will be much better running down my iPhone batteries.

I just d/l it and as the article alludes to, its fairly limited/worthless at this point. I wonder if its possible to Grandfather in this tech with a firmware update, or BDLive update. It seems kinda cool since it saves the trouble of inputting text and offers all the functionality of a full remote.

If this is not supported universally (no pun intended) it will be a wasted attempt at a cool idea.

Sounds like Universal execs were in a meeting one day and just decided, "Hey, let's create an iPhone app," just so they could say they have one. Jeez. Like I really need "exclusive Blu-ray content" on my 3" screen instead of my 52" screen! Whatever happened to BD-Live?

WOW I am SOOOOOO Glad they are releasing this app instead of releasing JAWS and the other 100 classic Universal movies on BD.
