The Criterion Collection has revealed a very European Blu-ray slate for February 2010, which consists of two new releases – Steve McQueen's 'Hunger' and Götz Spielmann's 'Revanche' – and one major classic film – Max Ophüls's 'Lola Montès'. 'Hunger' and 'Revanche' will feature director-approved high-definition transfers and DTS-HD Master Audio sondtracks, whereas 'Lola Montès' will come in uncompressed (LPCM) stereo.
Release details follow:
Hunger
- Video interviews with McQueen and actor Michael Fassbender
- A short documentary on the making of 'Hunger', including interviews with McQueen, Fassbender, actors Liam Cunningham, Stuart Graham, and Brian Milligan, writer Enda Walsh, and producer Robin Gutch
- “The Provo's Last Card?” a 1981 episode of the BBC program Panorama, about the causes and effects of the IRA hunger strikes at the Maze prison and the political and civilian reactions across Northern Ireland
- Theatrical trailer
- A booklet featuring an essay by film critic Chris Darke
Revanche
- New video interview with Spielmann
- The Making of 'Revanche,' a half-hour documentary shot on the film's set
- Foreign Land, Spielmann's award-winning student short film, with an introduction by the director
- US theatrical trailer
- An essay by critic Michael Wood
Lola Montès
- Audio commentary featuring Max Ophüls scholar Susan White
- “Max Ophüls ou le plaisir de tourner,” a 1965 episode of the French television program Cinéastes de notre temps, featuring interviews with many of Ophüls's collaborators
- Max by Marcel, a new documentary by Marcel Ophüls about his father and the making of 'Lola Montès'
- Silent footage of actress Martine Carol demonstrating the various glamorous hairstyles in 'Lola Montès'
- Theatrical rerelease trailer from Rialto Pictures
- A booklet featuring an essay by film critic Gary Giddins

I wonder how many people think its Steve McQueen the actor when they read about this release. I did, but its a new director who just happens to have the real Steve McQueen's name.
Also, thanks Criterion, preordered Lola. More catalogue releases, less IFC crap. |

Lola Montes will be mine!
I was fortunate to see a print of it earlier this year and it will look glorious on blu-ray |

All of the titles listed are brilliant -- give them a chance, guys, even if they are new. Filmmaking ability isn't gone from this world, contrary to what Hollywood would have you believe.
Seriously, though, I'm slightly bugged that neither of the new titles features a commentary. At least McQueen doesn't have to deal with a language barrier, does he? |

Oh my god! Finally, an Ophuls on Blu! It's not as great as Madame de ... but it's still a masterwork. Now, if I could only get me some of Sirk's 50s melodramas, I would be in hog heaven. Sirk was made to be seen on Blu. |

I wish they'd do a "Darjeeling Limited" disc, because I'm finally gonna give in and buy the original FOX release for $10 if it doesn't come soon. |

It's great that Criterion has taken to releasing both new and classic films of both big and small budgets on Blu-ray and is embracing the format as much as it is and with prices that are quite reasonable, especially if bought at a good reseller. I saw "Hunger" by director Steve McQueen when it played at the New York Film Festival last year at the Ziegfeld (nice place to see any film). "Hunger" is quite riveting and raw. Not necessarily easy to watch but a very good film. I'll definitely order it on Criterion Blu. I agree though, that there should be an audio commentary for this film.
Still lots of Criterion films I'm waiting to come to Blu: Spartacus (as someone said), Brazil, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeosie, Bicycle Thieves, Fanny & Alexander (theatrical & extended TV), La Jetee-Sans Soleil, 8-1/2 (almost here), Ran, In the Mood for Love, The Human Condition, 3 Women, Short Cuts, Days of Heaven, the list goes on... |
