The PS3 is Firmware-Upgradeable to 3-D

Posted November 19, 2009 10:36 AM by Juan Calonge

PlayStation 3 slim All PS3 units "will be firmware-upgradeable to 3-D", according to gaming site Gamasutra, citing a Sony presentation for investors given on Wednesday, when Sony outlined its strategy for growing its key business. In principle, that involves only games, but reinforces hope for existing PS3s being enabled for 3-D movie watching.

Sony Computer Entertainment plans to launch 3-D-related products for the home, including TV, Blu-ray Disc players/recorders and 3-D gaming on PS3 in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2011.

"...in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2011."

That means any time between March 31, 2010 to March 31, 2001, but likely to be closer to March 31, 2011.

I say, bring it on and I hope that it means it's firmware upgradable for 3D movies as well.

I won't be happy until my PS3 can give me a massage and make me breakfast!

One thing to note, however, is that the 3-D enabled by the PS3 will be "checkerboard" format half-resolution 960x1080 - similar to the 3-D system that current DLP HDTVs use. This is due to limitations in the HDMI 1.3 standard that the PS3 uses. So, you will be able to get 3-D however it will not be 1920x1080 3-D as some of the 2010 HDMI 1.4 standalones and 2010 HDMI 1.4 HDTVs will offer.

Still, even at half resolution it should be very impressive, I doubt you will be obsessing over loss of resolution while things are jumping off the screen

Very interesting! Hopefully this makes you're eyes adjust to 3D blu-ray more than they do now!!

PS3 = single greatest gaming decision of my life.

It is the exact opposite of the Sega Saturn.

Ruined makes a very good point. There's several different ways to do 3D, and the PS3 is still limited by the hardware in what methods it can use.

Sounds pretty cool. Glad to hear that I won't have to go buy a new console. Now if only 3D versions of movies were included on the Blus

"My only question is will this be compatible with older tvs?"

Your TV will have to be capable of 120 hz display.
