Posted November 26, 2009 04:39 AM by Juan Calonge

Blu-ray Movies In the week ended November 22, 'Star Trek' was the top-selling title on Blu-ray, according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert, which also puts the Blu-ray market share for this title at 38%, breaking the new-release record held by 'Watchmen'. That market share keeps going up for Blu-ray. I wonder how much longer before the phasing out of DVD begins? I heard they are waiting for set-top player install base to grow just a little bit more, before a plan is laid down.

I'm not surprised. Star Trek has been stuck at #1 on the Amazon.co.uk for a long time now. Mine should be arriving today!

I think its a credit to the film actually, as Star Trek is traditionally very strong in the US yet not as popular in the EU. I think you will see equally strong sales in the UK and EU.

This is really awesome news. The BD prices will drop so much if/when DVD goes!

I bought StarTrek the day after it's release, i'd been waiting for it to add to my collection of StarTrek movies, been a fan since 1963, this version done by J.J.Abrams is in the top two of my all time favorite ST movies, the first is the one with them saving the world by bringing whales back from the future, J.J.Abrams is a brilliant producer and i really like how he brought the new cast to life representing the original cast, Kirk, Bones, Spock, Cheov, Sulu & Uhura were spot on.
I went to the theatre twice to see this movie and blu-ray version is excellent.

DVD won't be gone for awhile, don't hold your breath. But the blu ray sales numbers are indeed staggering. Hey George Lucas, you paying attention?

@Rainman208 - me too. Anyone who will sit for 30 minutes I put through their paces in my home theatre. I don't want to be the only one of my friends collecting BD. It's getting expensive ;-)

so glad to hear this news about startrek. this film is breaking all kinds of records for startrek.
as far as lucas goes hes being an ass,no news there. his obsesson over starwars is disturbing.
paramounts has always released startrek on any format very quickly. i mean as a director whats he really done other then starwars. maybe whats happened with statrek will get george back in the real world and give us starwars on blu-ray.theres sure a lot of money sitting there george!

George Lucas is going to wait as long as possible and milk his fans as much as he can. I don't think star wars on BD will be any better than the DVDs maybe the new trilogy of which I would only by episode 3. That one behind ROTJ is my favorite of the whole series. Besides you kno Lucas is going to package them separately as the updated versions before releasing the original versions. He's going to milk this until our nipples bleed.

I agree with the above post, I guess you can say officially, Star Trek is back for a while at least anyway.

This is great news. Blu-ray just keeps getting bigger and bigger.

And to DCG007 and others...

Whats with all the Lucas bashing? I'm so confused how you can say he's milking the franchise by not releasing it on Blu-ray. He's not making money by it not being available... that's the opposite of milking. How can he get money form a Blu-ray that isn't released? Paramounts release of the ST films, both Original and TNG, are two very flawed sets. Only one film was restored, and none of the director cuts were included, and DNR was heavily applied to almost all. You and I both know there will be new sets in the future. That is called milking.

Not releasing the film in an imperfect state is called taking care of your product. That's what Lucas is doing, and so is Spielberg for that matter. The first box set of the Star Wars DVD's were nearly perfect in every way. Perfect picture, excellent Special Features (Empire Of Dreams anybody?) Same can be said for the original Indy trilogy. They were not half a$$ releases in any possible way. I'll happily wait a year or two for the Blu-rays because I know they'll be perfect too. Patience is good. Cause when you rush, you get DNR'd the Star Trek box sets.

Star Trek has milked fans in the video department a lot worse then Lucas ever has. You're blind if you can't see that. Just look at the original 3 seasons of ST... First it was single disc releases, then season set releases, then remastered season set releases, then HD-DVD and now Blu-ray. I'm not even mentioning the multiple releases of the ten films, the best of DVDs, or the other TV series'... And if you're going to get on Lucas' back about other lines of products (Toys, Comics, Books, Etc) Again, Star Trek has been just as worse. Is their a Star Wars Experience at Vegas? Every problem you have with Lucas can be applied ten fold to Star Trek. Again, it's simple Internet fan rage to pick on Lucas.

So I ask; by making the best possible DVD versions of Star Wars available from the get-go in a 4 disc box set, Lucas is milking us how exactly?

Honestly, while I don't blame the studios for waiting a bit before starting to favor BD releases over DVD too much, I expect that by mid 2010 they will be putting such plans into effect. With Blu-ray at the top of the "Most Wanted Electronics Gift" this holiday season and already spiking up to almost 40% market share, then 50% can't be more than 6 months off (for first week sales) IMO.

Once BD consistently is getting 50%+ of revenue, DVD will start seeing the later/lesser release treatment that VHS also received. And next holidays season we'll be seeing $50 players on Black Friday, which makes next season when family members get one simply because they don't have it yet.

It's over, the war is won, it's just a matter of cleaning up the last pockets of resistance.

@ Rengaw, who've been a fan since 1963? Thats pretty impressive seeing as the show didn't start until 1966
