BD Sales, November 23-29: Angels & Demons Wins by a Nose (Update)

Share
Posted December 3, 2009 04:06 AM by Juan Calonge

Blu-ray MoviesSony Pictures Home Entertainment's 'Angels & Demons' was the top-selling title on Blu-ray in the week ended November 23, according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert. In its second week, Paramount's 'Star Trek' got to number two, although both titles were remarkably close in sales volume - units sold were within 1 percent of each other. In Black Friday week, consumers "snapped up DVDs and Blu-ray Discs like candy", with estimated total packaged-media sales of 25 million discs.

Here are the top ten selling titles on Blu-ray for the week:
  1. Angels & Demons
  2. Star Trek
  3. X-Men Origins: Wolverine
  4. Up
  5. Monsters vs. Aliens
  6. Fast & Furious
  7. The Dark Knight
  8. I Am Legend
  9. The Taking of Pelham 123
  10. The Departed
Regarding Blu-ray market share, 'Angels & Demons' got a respectable 25% from BD sales. 'Four Christmases' had 10%, and the direct-to-video title 'Santa Buddies: The Legend of Santa Paws', 6%.

Update

Overall, BD sales revenue was $69.06 million, the highest figure ever for the format, up 224.04% from the same week last year.

Packaged-media sales revenue was $560.15 million, up 1.02% year-on-year. Blu-ray accounted for 12.3% of that revenue.

I picked up 7 Blu-ray titles on friday for just under $75. I love black friday. I'm actually surprised to see Angels & Demons in the #1 slot.

this list proves that lowering prices increases sales big time, most of the titles are "old" titles that got discounted heavily. i bought 1,3 and 10 as i already have 6,7,8.

I picked up "Angels & Demons," "Monsters vs Aliens" and "The Departed" on this list.

I am also surprised to see "Taking of Pelham 123" on the list too, especially considering how inferior it was the the 1970s original.

Some of us like Pelham....tho it isn't one of the 16 Blu's I bought during the sales last week. It's on my gift-list, so I didn't want to double-dip. --yes, lower the prices, we'll come running!!

I think Pelham 123 made the list because it was bundled with a PS3 at one store, and came with a laptop I kind of had my eye on at Best Buy. $400 computer or for $480 you could upgrade your DVD drive to a Blu-ray drive and they'd throw in the movie and a pair of headphones.

I also picked up Wolverine on Black Friday because it was down to $10. = ) Gotta love it.
