HBO has launched its first TV campaign dedicated entirely to Blu-ray Disc. This campaign, with the tagline “Unleash HBO on Blu-ray”, will run through Christmas on “male-centric shows and networks”, and aims to promote the studio's Blu-ray library to consumers who buy or receive BD players during the holidays.
“We traditionally advertise HBO DVD titles in the fourth quarter to promote top-of-mind awareness during the holiday retail period,” said Meredith Vincent, VP of marketing at HBO. “This year we have shifted our holiday campaign focus to Blu-ray. Our goal is to build awareness for HBO on Blu-ray, and specifically for shows like 'True Blood', 'Band of Brothers', 'Rome' and 'John Adams'”.
As previously reported (see blu-ray.com, December 6), TV shows generally aren't selling on Blu-ray as well as movies. However, according to Vincent, HBO is doing good, as its audiences demand the top-quality product, and many HBO shows feature particularly cinematic TV imagery, which is best shown in Blu-ray.
“Where possible we provide the consumer with more than enhanced picture and sound—we provide robust, immersive content that allows the fan and Blu-ray buyer to dive deeper into the program they love,” she said.
HBO is currently exploring which older shows (apart from 'The Sopranos') to release in Blu-ray. “We are evaluating catalog releases on a case by case basis,” said Vincent.
HBO's shows planned for 2010 include 'True Blood: The Complete Second Season', 'Hung', 'Bored to Death', and 'Entourage'.

Dear HBO,
Please bring the complete series of Deadwood to Blu-ray. One boxset would be fine.
Thank you very much and have a good day. |

Here come the rants for..."Where's Deadwood?"
Anyhow, HBO are doing a great job release titles like Rome, True Blood and Band of Brothers for those that live outside the US. We will never get to see this shows in Hi-Def on TV if it weren't for their Blu Ray releases. |

A long, long time ago (relatively speaking; technology moves fast), I commented either here or in an email to thedigitalbits.com) that I thought studios were making a mistake in how they marketed Blu-Ray. They never put it "out front" in their ads ("available on DVD and Blu-Ray" when it should have been the other way around) or even going so far as to release the Blu version earlier, especially for films that might have had a previous edition. But I'm seeing more up-front Blu ad copy nowadays, and that's a very good thing.
As for TV shows on Blu, I am very disappointed when a particular show isn't released that way, and I'm more inclined nowadays NOT to buy when no Blu version is available. Take note, anybody who has any "power" who might read this. |

One word... DEADWOOD. The Sopranos was one of the BEST shows in TV history. True Blood is so entertaining. The only HBO Series I'll ever buy would be Deadwood. |

Does this mean we won't be seeing seasons 2 - 5 on Blu-ray? Or does that mean Sopranos already has been selected to be released in full on Blu-ray? |

HBO got my $ when the Rome box set went on sale on Amazon last week. I never saw an episode of Rome until last night and it was great! 1080p video and DTS sound make these "tv shows" into long-form movies! I cant wait to watch the rest. I want Band of Brothers too. Maybe someone will get it for me for Christmas. |

Yeah, I'm really glad HBO, and Showtime as well really, or doing such a good job getting their TV shows on BD. That means I don't need to subscribe to them |
