Blu-ray Sales, Dec. 21-27: District 9 Wins the Week

Posted December 31, 2009 05:03 AM by Juan Calonge

Blu-ray MoviesDuring the week ended December 27, 'District 9' was the top-selling title on Blu-ray, according to Nielsen VideoScan. The South African science-fiction movie with an allegorical subtext also had a substantial 41% of its unit sales coming from high definition. 'The Hangover' came in second, with nearly 90% as many sales as 'District 9'.

The BD market share record still belongs to 'Terminator: Salvation', with 42%.

No charts and sales figures were published, because of the holidays.

Stop hating, the movie was excellent guys just admit it. I give credit to movies that deserve it and from day one I vowed that D9 was gonna brake records. This movie is very inviting and quite different in many ways though, plus the BD was just mind blowing. And there is not much price argument here why it sold so well because many stores (walmart, best buy etc) had it at 19.99 and when I ask the manager about the 17.99 sale he said it's different in many stores. This movie deserved every bit of hype around it and it delivers more than what it promised. Damn, I knew hang over wasn't gonna win over district 9, wow I think I'm gonna collect my bet from my brother finally.

I'm sure the God of War 3 demo helped quite a bit in attaining that 41% mark.

One of the best movies of the year. I wish Avatar was half as intelligent or original as District 9. Not surprised about The Hangover. I'd be hard pressed to find a funnier comedy that'd recently made it to blu-ray (though Extract was funnier than I thought it would be), it seems blu-ray is overrun by unfunny romantic comedies these days.

I found the movie itself to be okay at best. However it was a great looking and sounding disc. I have to agree with Nighthawk that the God of War III demo pushed sales a bit, especially right before Christmas. I actually thought about buying it just for the demo, but decided to Netflix instead and glad I did. I may pick it up when it drops to the $9.99 point.

I'm quite surprised by this. I picked it up, but only because I loved the movie and wanted to own it. I'm sure the God of War demo helped many people.

I really doubt the god of war demo had much to do with sales. I bought for the movie, not the demo.

I rented "District" yesterday, and it is fantastic. I will definitely buy it next week.

I think the movie speaks for it self and many of the customers were average home users who wanted to see or experience the movie in their homes. God of war has nothing to do with a good movie and I'm certainly sure many are not going to buy a movie for a demo ha, there is just not argument here.

Above-average PQ and AQ definitely make District 9 a no-brainer for everyone's collections!!

Had to upgrade my PS3 OS to play D9. Thought that was odd, but it was worth it.

i got it for Christmas knowing nothing about the movie beyond it will be long since it was by Peter Jackson. i ended up really digging the movie since it was very different but the story was well told. good to see a great movie doing so well i wonder how Jennifer's Body did which is another one i thought was good even though i had no expectations from it.

I missed D9 in the theater, but I watched the blu today at a friend's house. I think its an awesome and unique movie. The PQ and AQ was epic.

One of the best sci-fi movies from this decade, along with Sunshine.

I agree with what my girl said about D9, it was a much needed and great refresh to the sci-fi genre. Amazing movie, one of the best and most original takes I have seen on the subject i a while, if not ever.

What a silly movie. It was like a bad reworking of Alien Nation but with "fook fook fook" yelled every econd and Verhoeven style gore with none of the satirical meaning. Granted it was better then Transformers 2 and whatnot. But man, Star Trek and Avatar were miles better and they didn't require video game like violence. They rose above that...

Just bought this on the blind, and it was well-worth every penny. The film is very moving on many aspects, and entertaining for the no-brainers as well.
