Paramount Drops Blu-ray Support; Does Not Include Spielberg Movies

 Despite selling more movies on the Blu-ray format, Paramount has announced today that they will begin supporting HD DVD exclusively. This move, rumored to be driven by a $150M exclusivity deal with the HD DVD group, comes after Paramount began favoring Blu-ray releases with higher quality video encodings and more HD features. The deal covers all of Paramount's properties excluding those directed by Steven Spielberg.
The move will inevitably lengthen a format war which should never have been. Consumers will unfortunately suffer the most, as they will be forced to support a format which is being supported by corporations instead of consumers. No word was given as to how long the exclusivity agreement is for, but rumors indicate through 2008.
High definition enthusiasts can now only hope that a DVD-A/SACD situation hasn't been initiated by this decision.

I hate this format war and I can't stand the fact that great movies divided across studios are causing me to have to support both formats. D*mn it can't all the studios release to both formats and let the consumers choose who wins? I hate format wars, they only end up hurting us (the consumers). |

I can't wait untill Samsung comes out with thier new BluRay/HD DVD combo player. But what I don't understand is, when everything is going good for BluRay all everyone does is brag about how BluRay is better than HD DVD. But once HD DVD has a win on its side now everybody wants to boycot Paramount and whine about it. I personally will buy both formats so that I can enjoy my favorite movies. DO ME A FAVOR AND STOP THE WHINING AND DEAL WITH IT. |

I am shocked that Paramount could be so short sited. It is obvious that they were paid off to support the HD DVD format, but the thing I don't get is that it is not that much money speaking relatively to them. In the long run they will loose a lot more money by not selling home videos
Microsoft is doing this to prolong the format war so that they can hopefully gain more control with X-Box live and video downloads. Maybe Paramount would like to see downloads take over in the future too.
If you look, Paramount has very few movies in the top 100 Blu-rays released so far. Partly due to there pricing. I have to say that of any studio releasing on Blu-Ray, I own the fewest of Paramount with only 3 titles, simply because they are priced so much higher and they do not have as good of a catalog.
Also I'm not too broken up about Transformers. I didn't think the movie was that great. I am sad to hear about Shrek 3, but I never expected it to be realeased immediately on Blu-ray any way |

@HT Guru Samsung will not be allowed to come out with a player that does both formats legally since Sony is not allowing anyone in the Blu-ray consortium to use their special BD diodes in a player that will support both formats. You thought Paramount are the ones screwing us but it's actually Sony. As soon as somebody is allowed to make a player that does both then the format war will be over. |

I just tried to go to Paramount's website paramount.com and their website is not even working. Maybe some disgruntled hacker hacked into it and took it down after hearing this news. |

Regarding the HD DVD supporters that only post here to laugh at Blu-Ray supporters: it simply astounds me how people could be happy about this development simply out of wanting their particular format to stick it to the competing format, regardless of what is in the best short and long term interests of the home video industry and the consumer. Blu-Ray winning at this point would have been better for the HD market (those straddling the fence would have gotten onboard once a clear winner was established) and it also would have been better for the optical disc format in the long run (dragging this war out longer and longer only serves to make the fate of BOTH formats uncertain). So while you get on your high horses and laugh at the fact that Paramount has just delivered a blow to Blu-Ray, maybe you should stop for a minute and think about what it is you're really happy about (an even longer format war, more uncertainty, and more consumer confusion about both hi def formats in general). ::sigh:: I'm sorry, but that's a really shitty attitude. Maybe not toward your precious HD DVD, but toward films in general and the right of the buyer to watch them on THEIR format of choice, not Paramount's. Believe me, if the tables were completely turned around with regarding studio support, storage capacity, and sales figures, I'd be supporting HD DVD right now. Not because it's the better format, but because it would better for the consumer. But hey, why root for the format that has more studio support and still enjoys a clear lead in the war so that this will end sooner rather than later and make ALL of your favourite films available on ONE format that EVERYONE has because the other is rendered meaningless when you can just laugh at the Blu-Ray camp instead? ::sigh:: God, this is ridiculous. A lot of the posts on here seem to be knee-jerk reactions like "I bought X Blu-ray discs today!! That will teach Paramount not to mess with BD w00t!!1!" which seems a little fanboyish. I can't believe some people would refuse to get their favorite movie out of spite for some stupid company. I really don't think there will be a winner for this "format war" and the only ones losing will be average Joe Consumer who doesn't know what is going on here. |

Isn't this kind of similar to how the VHS vs. Beta "war" was solved back in the late 70's...? Everyone knew (and knows) that Beta was far superior to the poorly VHS tape, but corporate money forced us all go for the lesser choice...
Paramount and Universal should look more at what the comsumers want instead of the $$. |

First I would like to ask if anyone knows for sure whether or not they will be pulling titles that have dates (Blades of Glory and Face-Off)?? I am sure this means that titles from now on are exclusive (transformers) but what about the others?
With that said, to say that I am disappointed is an understatement. I just recently bought Disturbia and Shooter on Blu-ray, which account for 2 of my last 4 purchases. And I haven't seen Blades of Glory yet and I was looking forward to picking it up next Tuesday. And Face-Off was one of my favorite movies of all time. I also think Transformers was a great movie! (thought shrek 3 was so-so in comparison to the others). I understand the goal to make $ and everything but at the expense of all of us consumers is very shady IMO.
To make it worse I tried to send them an email to express my opinion and now I just get some error message when I try to send it through. But like others have said, Transformers and Shrek 3 will be hits to Blu-ray, but when they come out it won't drastically change anything. Blu-ray still has more quality titles coming out IMO to take this punch and keep on rolling.
Side note: I can't say how many times I have talked to people at Best Buy that were buying HD-DVD discs and they didn't have an HD-DVD player and just read the "DVD combo format" and got confused. Afterwards I set them straight that its not a regular dvd I show them where it is and talk about the differences between HD-DVD and Blu-ray. But I neither work in that department or work that often so I wonder how many discs they sell to consumers that do not even have a player???!! |

Randall, I own a Home Theater business and it is my job to do research on all of the new technology. The Samsung player is the HD BD-UP5000 and it should be available in the next couple of months for around a thousand dollars. It will have HDMI 1.3 and support all the features of HD DVD and Blu Ray extras. Personally I don't care who wins or loses I just want to watch my movies in High Def and enjoy them on my new HDTV tv and AV receiver I spent alot of money on. |

I hope Paramount looses a lot of money. Dell has been selling Blu-ray players in their top computers and Apple is rumored to be selling a Blu-ray player soon with their Mac Pro systems. I hope people boycott Paramount HD-DVD movies as they must have gotten $$ under the table to do this. Maybe the porn industry will determine the winner. Hope they support Blu-ray exclusively. |

A single hi-def format would have been much better, too bad the two camps could not play well together. Oh well, the format war has made it affordable to invest in this great format. Sony just might now regret trying to be the bully on the hi-def block....
I'll gladly show my support for Paramount by going to Fry's today to pick up a few more titles for my ever-expanding HD DVD library! |

Combo players will not solve anything. Have you seen the price of a combo player? If LG wants to make a combo player they have to pay Sony and Toshiba the licensing fees for both technologies.
What makes you think a combo player will be cheap enough in the near future to make the war obsolete?

Beta was not necessarily the superior choice. While it may have had a better pic, did it really make a difference on televisions back then? Also, beta held about an hour of video...meaning multiple tapes for most movies. If Blu-ray needed multiple discs for each movie (or the caddy which it originally needed) would it really be considered the superior format. |

It doesn't make sense at all. while the bluray is winning and beating HDDVD, they decide to support it. This move will ruin what the whole HD industry was looking for ( one HD format to be chosen in short term). Now, this move will not make the consumer buy HDDVD or bluray. it will get the consumer confused and make him stick with the DVD rather than buying HD movies. Thanks for that paramount.
Howard Stringer must do something about that. Playstation 3 depends on this war and it will affect on its performance. |

What upsets me the most about this whole format war is that I have clients on a daily basis ask me which HD DVD format they should choose. I tell them to hold off for a year or more till it's decided. And the same goes for my compitition, they're saying the same thing. What sucks is that if you own an HDTV you can watch sateliite in HD but you can't watch DVD in HD because you may be throwing your money away if you choose the wrong format. |

I made the jump to next generation video back in February when I bought my PS3, and since then I have only bought new movies on blu-ray as I cannot go back to watching standard dvd. Now that blockbuster is blu-ray exclusive, I only rent blu-ray disc format movies. All this move from paramount/dreamworks does is prevent them from getting any more of my $ for their products. It's a slap in the face to drop support for a growing installed base at this point of the next gen format war, and there is no proper reason for them doing so (bribes). Transformers was allright, I guess it'll have to be a rental from blockbuster on standard dvd (I'm glad the ps3 will upscale it to 1080p). Same for Shrek 3, I didn't get to the theatre for that one and was looking forward to it in hi-def at home, but now it'll be a trip to blockbuster to rent the standard dvd version. I will keep on supporting blu-ray and will not buy any more products from paramount or dreamworks until they come to their senses and return to supporting blu-ray. I can understand where Universal is coming from as they were always hd-dud, however for a company to be neutral and revert back to hd-dud at this point in time when it's obvious to anyone with a brain stem that blu-ray is kicking hd-duds ass defies logic and reason. Get back at me when you sober up paramount/dreamworks, I might let u guys back into my home theatre then. |

I have been waiting for blu-ray players to come down in price a little bit more but this latest news has pursuaded me to buy now. I have chosen to support blu-ray because i believe it is the superior format. I am willing to pay extra for this quality. Why is it so hard for Paramount and Universal to understand what the consumer wants. |

I kind of blame this on blu-ray also. They had many opportunities to deal the death-blow to hd-dud. Fox has had no contribution except all talk. Disney is dragging their feet to give us what we want (pixar). With all the studio support we still get about 1 or very little quality titles per month since the year started. And that is why we are only beating hd-dud by 2 to 1. HD-dud only had Universal and Warner to release for them yet we're only beating them by double margin. If only the blu studios stepped it up and truly declare war by sales, this could have been a 4 to 1 or more since the ps3 re-pricing. If blu didn't want to throw money to buy support, then they should have used their advantage to win this war. I hate to see how the tide has shifted to an elongated effect. Its like catching the big one and reeling it in slowly, just to have it spit out the hook and get away. But I guess there are benefits to everything in life, you just have to look at the brighter side of things. |

I think you'll see Fox ramping it up now to the pace of Warner and with that so too will Disney.
I think at CES 2008 by the latest Paramount will change their minds, especially when Universal announces neutrality. |

Probably not a whole lot we can do about Paramount at the moment, so instead of wasting time and energy on them, we should focus our efforts to end the format war elsewhere. Send letters to neutral studios like WB, encouraging them not to make the same mistake Paramount has, or to Universal, encouraging them to go neutral at the very least. |

Holy frickin' sh**!! Is Paramount stupid or what!? With 300 selling 2:1 on HD-DVD and better quality titles due to more space on Blu-ray!! They must be smoking pot!! Rumors has it, Paramount got $50 million on the deal and Dreamworks got $100 million. HD-DVD group is desperate as hell, paying a hell out of a lot just to get exclusive deals with Paramount cuz they know their format is going down the drain. This is the way I see it, Paramount collects the $150 million deal to have exclusive titles till end of the year, then HD-DVD format fails and Paramount will jump back on to the Blu-ray bandwagon and re-sell all their movies that were on HD-DVD to Blu-ray making even more MONEY!!! |

Both sides are going to lose out, because the longer this goes on, the more people
are going to get used to downloading video for the sheer convenience of it, and end
up waiting for small & incremental improvements in quality. Maybe in 5 years
downloads will be up to what blu-ray was last year.

I dont' blame Paramount, really. Even with the sales of 300 i doubt WB made more than a few mil from Blu Ray sales. Paramount was making considerably less, and this is $150M of pure profit right now. It's unfortunate for us consumers though. Most of the people i know with HD TVs are waiting for a format winner, after purchasing a $3000TV it's not the price of the players that's keeping them from adopting. Think about it. |

BAD NEWS: No HIGH-DEF Transformers!!!!! (Actually that's REALLY, REALLY Bad News)
GOOD NEWS: The Blu-Ray Camp needs to respond, and FAST!! Best way? Lower COSTS in Media (MSRP: $24.99 across the board), and Players (A low-end player @ $199.99). This news should facilitate a change quickly! IN FACT, they need to respond in the next 60 days BEFORE the Holiday Season gets ramped up. IF they want to win this war, time to put pressure on DISNEY/PIXAR to provide "The Incredibles", FOX to provide "X2", "I ROBOT" and "INDEPENDENCE DAY", SONY already will provide us the "SPIDER-MAN Trilogy" and the continued sales of the PLAYSTATION 3 and PC BLU-RAY Drives / Burners (c'mon DELL and APPLE), we need to CRUSH HD-DVD sales BEFORE TRANSFORMERS is even released. ALSO, when TRANSFORMERS does come out, let the DVD Sales (from Blu-Ray Supporters) reflect the lack of support to upgrade to HD-DVD. |

Send feedback to Viacom concerning this press release and inform them of your decision to not only
boycott disc sales (including DVD) but also box office sales.
I have already done so and reminded them of their responsibility to their shareholder to make sound
business decisions which further their future profitability.
I stated very clearly that I have no intention of purchasing an HD DVD player. |

First of all, I'm not an HD-DVD fan, I think all this "format war" is dumb stupid.
Competition is good, and having two format is good, maybe they'd compete on quality, i.e. they'd stop releasing poor single-sided bad-encoded MPEG2 discs.

Neutral
Warner
New Line
Blu-ray
Sony
Fox
Disney
Remember how opposed "SACD and DVD Audio" and all the DVD Recordable formats were. Now its all about the single players that can play every format. Bring on the dual format players. |

I did not see any HD DUD fans post at all in article announcing FOX titles.
Here is the breakdown of my movies collection as of now.
70% or more of my movies are walt disney's, followed by FOX, followed by Warner, followed by Universal, Followed by New Line (Warner), followed by paramount/dreamworks, and then Sony.
So, why I worried with that switch? |

Well HD-DVD does suck. it is by fact an inferior format. And only ignorants people would want to get HD-DVD's thinking they get the best technology. Ignorance has always been a problem in human history and Hi-tech ignorance is prooving out to be no exception.
I Just hope that I won't have to spend an entire generation with an inferior HD-DVD format simply because people are stupid, that's all i'm saying. |

Unfortunately there will not be a clear cut winner until all of the studios release on one format. Since I don't see that happening, the only logical conclusion to this cluster fsck of a format war is for manufacturing companies to release players that support both formats, and then the consumer gets screwed by having two formats co-exist and confusion reigns the market. F*** that! Boycot both these formats so this doesn't happen!! I'm sick and tired of the consumer getting the shaft on these deals!! |

The rumor is that Microsoft paid Paramount $50M, and Dreamworks $100M, to make this switch (until now they had been neutral). Why would Microsoft do this? Pretty simple, if consumers are confused about which format to buy they are more likely just to download HD content from the only provider currently selling HD content online. That provider is Microsoft...
Bad news basically for consumers interested in HD content, as this will really kill sales for both formats through the year. Consumers want one choice. |

I might be mistaken but wasn't Viacom (Paramount's parent company) the parent company for Blockbuster before they spun them off in 2004? now arent we glad that Blockbuster are their own publicly-owned company and they are 100% Blu! I did my share of 30 emails today, I will do 30 more tomorrow..! Yeah I guess I am immature like that when it comes to being jipped out of choices as consumer, but as long as the Viacom/Paramount/Dreamworks execs are comfy with their mere $150 million buck, then I can surely not lose any sleep. Whats a $150 million bucks? One good movie (e.g. Transfromers) can make that 3 folds! What a bunch of losers, all I can say is that their shareholders are gonna sniff up the stink from the 150 million dollar HDDVD bribe...better deliver some answers to your shareholders and more importantly your cosumers! |

I have been looking over the press release and they say Blades of Glory will be exclusive to HD-DVD, funny thing is that Amazon has it for pre-sale and I ordered a copy and it will be here next week. What does this exclusive mean exactly, they will offer it on the Blu-ray, but not advertise that they will. I am confused Paramount and I think you are too..... |

WOW I WAS PISSED WHEN I SAW THIS!!! omg no transformers on blu-ray? wow..paramount is just making things more complicated for consumers...hd quality is good but not as good as blu-ray and i bought my ps3 mainly for blu-ray movies...it's stupid of paramount to do this and now i won't be able to watch transformers on blu-ray when it comes out..how lame! i hope paramount reconsiders what they're done and how they have ruined many blu-ray player owner's lives!! |

Good, HD-DVD can have Universal and Paramount/Dreamworks that's find by me... I'll just boycott Paramount/Dreamworks movies period except for Transformers... I'll just buy Transformers series on standard DVD, I'll just upconvert it on my PS3... That's only product that I'll buy it from Paramount/Dreamworks... I really wanted Transformers to come out on Blu-Ray, Paramount/Dreamworks lost my interest... It seems Paramount/Dreamworks have thumb up their asses... Disturbia is going to be last movie that I'm going to rent from Paramount/Dreamworks... Good, example look at 300 Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD... Look at the ratio 2:1 on the Blu-Ray counterpart... Everyone is knows that Blu-Ray kicking ass on HD-DVD... Numbers doesn't lie people... What if Warner Bros. looked at the ratio on 300 and decided to make movies only exclusive on Blu-Ray only not HD-DVD... I hope Warner Bros. release Batman Begins and V for Vendetta on Blu-Ray it will destroy the numbers on HD-DVD version... What if Fox and New Line Cinema releases Star Wars Trilogy and Lord Of The Trilogy exclusively to Blu-Ray only... And I heard that Halo the movie is suppose to release only on Fox... It would be funny watching Halo movie on PS3 or a Blu-Ray player... It seems M$ got their thumb asses, too... The format war would be done... I heard that Blu-Ray players is suppose to drop the prices between $299 to $399 around holiday season... It's going to have huge impact to against on HD-DVD... too bad for Paramount, all they're going to do is lose a lot of business. I herd that Michael Bay was pissed off over this announcement, now Transformer will not have the true quality that is should have. He also stated that if there is a next Transformer that it would not be part of Paramount. At least Mr. Bay knows what's up. |

As unfortunate as this is, for us, this is just how corporate America treats people, honestly. Our wants are not taken into consideration anymore. And people that are claiming to boycott are liars. When these movies finally are released on BluRay, the large majority of us will go out and buy them. That's just how we are. Paramount knows this, and is exploiting it. The problem in their logic is that this is only going to HURT their overall HD sales, not help it. No one is going to go buy an HD DVD player just to see Transformers. We'll just watch it in upconverted DVD fashion. The profit margin on a DVD vs. a BluRay disc has to be smaller..especially considering that you can buy any DVD on the day of release, retail from Best Buy or Wal-Mart(or Frys even) for like 15 bucks. I dunno. I suppose that Paramount wasn't going to make $150M in profits from BluRay sales in the next 18 months, and by the end of said 18 months all of this nonsense really will be over and they can just go to BluRay exclusivity then, but it is extremely infuriating and insulting as a consumer, because they are, essentially, just spitting on us. What Sony SHOULD do is pay New Line to go Blu-exclusive...denying the LotR trilogy to HDDVD would cripple them significantly. Plus Rush Hour, etc etc. I mean, if HDDVD can just buy people's loyalty, I don't see why Sony can't..they have vastly more money. |

This is actually good news. For one, if you currently are blu-ray only, HD-DVD players are VERY affordable compared to what you paid for a blu-ray player.
"But this just extends the format war! Damn Paramount!" Actually, this blame for this whole format war can be blamed solely on SONY. Do some research. the DVD forum chose HD-DVD as the next disc format, and Sony being the arrogant and greedy company they are, said screw that we are doing this instead. They then proceeded to BUY other studios' exclusivity (just like HD-DVD has now done to even the odds) and sell blu-ray players that cost double what a comparable HD-DVD player cost that had more capabilities and standard features.
Go look on wiki for bd spec 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0 (1.1 is mandated by November first 2007, 2.0 will be sometime 4th quarter 2008) and ask yourself why the hell was Sony selling blu-ray players for $999 that can't even decode advanced audio codecs?
I encuorage everyone to go educate themselves on both formats. FYI you can't get a good education on HD-DVD looking at a blu-ray site. |

Hi, I read about 80% of this and thought it's time to post my own tuppence worth. Just gone onto Amazon.co.uk and Blades of Glory is available on Blu-Ray (Pre-Order). On Amazon.com you can sign-up to be notified when it becomes available. So time to pre-order and request availabilty :-). I've been sitting on the fence waiting for this to go one way or the other (not wanting to make a bad ginancial decision). Well I'm getting tired of waiting and plan to have a PS3 in my hands ASAP and I'm drawing up my short list of films that I will start buying. It's tiem for my Projector and dedicated Cinema room to show me what it really can do.
Out of interest, I'd wonder what would have happened if all studio's were neutral and pricing was the same hmm....
NB: I will be choosing my Blu-Ray purchases carefully as I don't think all titles really benefit from HD, same as I don't watch everything in my Cinema room, only really good: Action, Sci-Fi etc.. comes to life in the proper surrounding. |

This doesn't change my decision to support Blu-ray. Honestly, I can rent Transformers on DVD and I will not buy any more Paramount/Dreamworks DVDs.
I was really upset at first, until it hit me: How many movies (really) are going to be released on HD-DVD compared to Blu-ray? I can live without Transformers and a couple others; I would rather have Spider-man. |

SD4251, sure go ahead and pay $299 for your cheap rip-off 1080i HDDVD player, but please remember that most HDDVD movies cost about 10-20% more than the BD equal (case and point 300 $35 on HDDVD and $27 on Bluray, with countless other examples of how HDDVD get their money back from you). Sure, go save a hundred bucks on a player for now, you will pay that back in less than 10-15 movies. Atleast Sony/Panasonic/Pioneer/Samsung and countless other hardware manufacturers didnt wanna dupe their customers by selling them an inferior value product that doesn't support the "Full HD" that HDDVD is supposed to be all about...yeah I know Bluray is still not 100% finished product but it will be sooner than you can expect, even now with it now being fully mandated, and with less TV advertising, people still are buying BD movies 2:1 compared to HDDVD, and Standalone players are 1:1, not counting PS3s which count for more than 30% of BD customers! So go and take your red pill, your headache will resume by spring/summer when BD wins! |
