Fox and MGM have revealed 29 upcoming Blu-ray releases. Included are 19 catalog titles from Fox and MGM, and 10 new release titles to be sold day-and-date with their DVD releases. These titles include 'Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer' and 'Live Free or Die Hard'. The remainder of the day-and-date titles is expected to be announced shortly, as well as specs for each release.
Fox has also promised to release one state-of-the-art Blu-ray title per month, with features never before seen on a Blu-ray release. These titles will take full advantage of BD-Java and BD-Live (Q4) to deliver a unique movie experience. December's 'Independence Day' will feature a "Alien Scavenger Hunt" where viewer have to guess the correct number of aliens in a scene to unlock hidden content.
IMO this makes the Paramount Announcement a wash....actually based off this list alone, my Fox vs. Paramount purchases for the 4th quarter are 12Fox BD's, vs. 4 Paramount HDDVD's. I decided to pass on the Jack Ryan collection since it's HDDUD only now & Blades of Glory. Paramount will see less of my money (a dual format supporter) with their decision to back the lesser spec format. I just can't fathom a deep investment of their titles to play back on buggy equipment and backed by a monopolistic pig of a company lining their pockets like Microsoft is.
I say...Screw em, HDDVD needs Paramount more than BD did anyhow...and I'll take this FOX/MGM trade any day of the week!!!
Yeah these will be good watches but I don't know about purchases. I still think Transformers and Jack Ryan will be better "Titles To Own". I'm already pricing a combo player. BUt I'm not a big sell out. Afr all, with a combo player, whatever format wins (please blu-ray), I'll be able to get discs from the losing side inexpensively
I hope that Paramounts greed is the final nail in the coffin for Microsoft. I hope we see the other studios making announcements similar to this soon. It'd kill the format war almost instantly. The customers would benefit and the studios would benefit. The only loser would be Microsoft, and boo fucking hoo for them.
I will get ID4, Mr & Mrs Smith, Day after Tomorrow, Fantastic 4 SS.
I'll just get Transformers on Sd DVD, i'm not getting a HD-DVD just for that. Maybe I can import it on BD from somewhere.
What a great day! Paramounts move just up the antes and gets Fox out of the dark. Now instead of Fox fiddling the sidelines, we get a load of titles and more competition and the latter has never been bad for consumers.
Paramount was upsetting. I would have purchased Transformers ( and I know I am going to get killed for this) but now I won't since I really didn't think it was all that great. I sure hope they are releasing 28 Weeks Later day and date too.... This made the Paramount news not so bad.
Alot of these will be great, but it's all about the Die Hard Series for me!!! Yippie-ki-yay Fox! Paramount is a pretty big disappointment, especially for future releases like Braveheart, Titanic, etc. (assuming they're not back with BD when those happen, or at least neutral again). However, since Spielberg titles aren't exclusive, I wonder where the Indiana Jones series will end up over this, as they are one of the bigger titles in Paramount's catalog? Of course, technically those are also Lucasfilm...and Spielberg. Still, I've gotta believe those will end up on HD or BD around the time of Indy 4 next year, so that should be interesting. In the mean-time, three more cheers for Fox!!!
Love ya Fox ! I see several movies from this list I'll be looking forward to seeing at 1080p with uncompressed pcm, and looking forward to the bd-java and bd-live functionality. Now do what must be done and put an end to this destructive format war, release The Star Wars Original trilogy and Prequel Trilogy on Blu-Ray !!!
Wow I have like 15 movies to buy now from Fox in addition to all the other stuff coming before the holidays. Now if WB will just release Batman Begins I will be content...
Those are some great movies! Die Hard, ID4, I, Robot....I'm gonna be buying a ton of movies this holiday season. Just one thing guys....Transformers is a Spielberg movie; he was executive producer, so I think we should be seeing it on BD.
The only movies from Paramount that I wish I could get Only blu-ray are Transformers and Shrek, but I am so happy that Fox has the will power not to sell out like Paramount. These Fox movies will get me by until those 2 Paramount or should I say Dreammount releases there 2 good movies of the year. There was one bit I good news that I got out of all of this and that is that Spielberg stated that his movies that he directed will not be exclusive to either format. That means his movies will be release on DVD, HD-DVD, and of course the format that is going to win the war blu-ray. YAY that means that is Indiana Jones 4 will be available in blu-ray if the war has not ended by the time it is released.
FOX, man are you ridin' in like the cavalry today. Feel good about the support you are bringing to the table and just know how much it is appreciated by the masses of high def adopters. Can't wait to show you my appreciation with my wallet. Ronin, Edward Scissorhands, Die Hard Trilogy, Cast Away and Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer and are imminent financial commitments on my part. Here's hoping you deliver us Fight Club. We'll be seeing you ...lots ...at the cash registers. Cheers.
Way to go FOX! Thank you! This news almost completely makes up for the Paramount debacle. Give
me the Die Hard series, Ronin and even throw in a little Independance Day in there for good
measure! Give us Fight Club, too. Now let's end this war with shock and awe and give us the Star
Wars prequels and triology. Are you listening George??!!
Yes. Fox!!
I hope they read these comments pages on these forums. Most of these titles I will be buying to
replace my old dvd's, not to mention my Fox titles in my collection is vast and I intend on replacing
every one of them!!
Keep it up Fox!!!!!
It's about f'ing time they announced movies. I will most certainly be getting the following:
From Hell
ID4
28 Days Later
Red Dawn
I, Robot
I can't wait to see what else they announce. Will this finally end all the damn "WTF Fox?!" threads.
Fox, i'm very pleased with this announcment. I see, however, that you forget to announce the release dates for X-Men 1 and 2. May we hope that they will also be released before the holidays?
thank you fox. paramount are nuts. startrek can kiss my ass this whole hd thing is turning to shit.
Thank you microsoft. BUY A MAC death to microsoft . bastards
Alright Fox...give me
The Simpsons Movie,
Man on Fire,
Passion of the Christ,
The Sound of Music,
& The Princess Bride
and we'll be best buds!
Blu-Ray you sure know how to calm my nerves!
I am wondering, has anyone else heard about a 20th anniversary edition of the Princess Bride coming to DVD? If so, you'd think it would be released on Blu-Ray as well, since it was already announced and then post-poned.
Yeah even as a Trek fan I can live without. I haven't bought any seasons of the show (any of the Trek programs) because I'm not paying 100 bucks a pop when I can turn on cable and record them. I did buy some of the movies but thats different. Look I supported Blu-ray and this burns me but now I may buy an el cheapo HD-DVD player. I like Transformers, Heroes, Jason Bourne, Serenity, Jack Ryan, and more. I was fine when it was one ompany but this is too much. I may have to go neutral. I need my HD
thankx alot fox thank u guys for coming back wow its been mixed emotions for me
1.paramount leave:(
the fox and MGM announces kick a$$ titles don't know how to feel but contended would be the right word thanx
Not that he was ever that far out of favor for me, but if George Lucas actually stepped up and released the entire Star Wars saga as a Blu-ray exclusive set, he would be completely redeemed to me!!! That sure would hold some water in this stupid-ass war, and it would just be so sweet if he swooped in like the tech-savvy, industry-shaping Lucas of old and saved the day. Not that BD is doomed in any way, and that is surely wishful thinking, but that would just be so frickin' awesome!!
My other fear, and this was hinted at as a grim possibility over at The Digital Bits, is that WB might follow Paramount and switch to HD-DUD exclusive in exchange for short term cash incentives from MS. That would be very bad as they also have New Line (LOTR anyone??!!). I'm reeeaaalllly looking forward to owning Harry Potter, Batman Begins, LOTR and countless other WB/NL titles on BD, and that would just plain suck, not to mention truly create a wide gap of studio support holes to really fuel this war on and on and on (that would mean Universal, Paramount, Dreamworks and WB/NL vs. Fox, MGM, Disney, Lionsgate, & Sony...Yikes!). God forbid, if that does indeed happen, both BD and HD-DUD could end up going the way of SACD and DVD-audio. Microsoft sure would be happy then, wouldn't they? As happy as I am with Fox and as dissapointed as I am with Paramount, the key now has got to be WB remaining at least neutral as they have been, or HD formats as a whole could be in real trouble. Maybe all of us here should put our heads together and think of a way to try and keep WB on our side for a while!!!!
YES! I've been jonesing for Master and Commander ever since I saw my first BR. Now it's coming sooner than later. sweet! That b%&*h better be BD50 w/lossless.
I love Fox.
paramount will not see another cent from me in any way shape or form.
FU paramount sellouts. You might as well get into politics cause you just got lobbyed. Paid to turn your backs on the people. DIE pARAMOUNT.
Now all we need is for Fox to drop the A-Bomb - Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. Subpar-amount , NightmareWorks and Puny-versal will never be able to rebuild from that blast.
Well living in the u.k. some movies like braveheart , and titanic are ditrubuted by fox lets hope they will release these here in the next 18 months does anyone know how the paramount deal will effect overseas distrubution rights even like face off wich is distrubuted by paramount in the u.s. is a disnet title in the u.k?????
