Battlestar Galactica Blu-ray Exchange Packaging for First-Edition Buyers

Share
Posted February 5, 2010 06:59 AM by Juan Calonge

Universal StudiosSome owners of the first edition of Battlestar Galactica: The Complete Series had voiced their complaints to Universal Studios Home Entertainment about its bulky and unwieldy packaging. Now that a new edition with a slimmer packaging has been announced, Universal has emailed them back, offering to send the new packaging.

Universal explains that the new packaging is "comprised of conventional cases regularly used to store DVD or Blu-ray discs", although product images are still unavailable. In the message, the studio also gives instructions about the personal information and proof of purchase required (you must return the front flap -with Cylon face- and top of the Season One package), and the address where the request for new packaging should be sent.

However, a printed copy of the email from Universal must be attached to the correspondence. Therefore, unless this program opens to all, owners of the first edition who want to receive the new packaging should first contact Universal Studios via their online contact form and wait for a reply from the studio. This offer is limited to consumers with US mailing addresses only.

Hopefully they will listen to complaints about "flippers" too.

Aren't the seasons coming out in the digicase/box type thing? I don't think they would make a third set of cases/covers for the new set, probably digicase/box just like the seasons but all in a big digibox to store them in sort of like how the Star Trek Original Movie Collection on VHS came out.

I love the old packaging but I agree that it is bulky and some might not!

I've never been a fan of that kind of packaging. Take a look at 'The Unit: The Complete Series' on how REALLY to not do a complete set. I prefer when a series box set is one big box that holds the individual seasons and can fit in the same row on bookshelves with your other movies and TV shows. See:

Wow - people actually sent in complaints to Universal? It must have been a lot of complaints and that's great if Universal listened.

I think this is a pretty cool move by Universal. I work for a mid-sized, rural hospital that thrives on customer service and word of mouth, and I believe that customer service is often a tool not prioritized by many large companies who don't necessarily care anymore or feel immune to the effects of "word of mouth". It's nice to see that Universal is listening to "the people"... something that FOX doesn't do unless they see the $$$ after the complaints (see Family Guy renewal post-DVD Season 1 sales). Granted, big companies become number-centric simply because that's the nature of the beast. So it's nice to see a big company respond to customer comments/complaints.

Pretty cool. If I get the new packaging, I can also include The Plan in the set.

Thanks badlieut and bluray.com! I sent them an online contact this AM as I purchased my set last summer, and it is definitely out of control how large it is! It would be sweet to have it fit on the same shelves the rest of my blu's are on.

@ superdrag ninja - To be fair to FOX, they did the exact same thing when Simpson fans complained about the character head packaging not fitting in with the other sets on their shelf. They created a new sleeve for it that had the more traditional spine for a more aesthetically pleasing look on the shelf.

Many people think these kind of issues are silly but serious collectors, for the most part, really want there shelves to look consistent I think. It really bugs me when things stick out like a sore thumb. Warner Bro's Digibook series are too tall. Box sets are major offenders, I hope when HBO puts Six Feet Under out on BluRay that they provide a more traditional look to the packaging. While I appreciate the creative ideas that go into it, it just doesn't look good on the shelf.

Great. I'm in Canada, so it looks like I'm S.O.L. on this one. Hopefully I can find some kind of workaround.

I hope the people at Disney/Buena Vista are taking notes on this for the forthcoming Lost: The Complete Collection.

You know...I wonder if Warner Brothers would send us Blu cases for our Casablanca movies we bought in the crazy collector's packaging???

AND...someone made a comment about 'flipper' combos too...

DVD has served it's purpose. It's over.

I don't WANT the goddam dvd version on da 'flip' side of my Blu-ray disc.

Tell the Mr. Flinstones out there, after you're done makin' Wilma's BED rock, go out and buy your 'stoneaged' A$$ a Blu-ray player!

Flipper combos? Yeh Right.

That would be like Blackberry making their high tech phones with 'rotary dials' on the back of them.

NOW...if Universal Home Video wants to make Blu-ray / HD-DVD flippers?...THEN you'd be helpin' some people. (The ones that invested in HD-DVD players)

I'd send away for this, but I don't want to deface the old packaging.

@CareyD1080p - why should they do that? you were paying more for the special packaging with the centurion doll.

@Bucky - True.

But If I was one of those who bought the first run version, and never given an OPTION to purchase a version with slim packaging and no collectors items...I'D want the difference refunded.

Hell, I'd send them back the ENTIRE first run version (with bulky pkg n doll), and they can send ME the new version AND the difference in a refund check.

When you bought The Dark Knight, there were like 10 versions. Blade Runner had like 3 or 4.

I'm glad I waited on BSG. Cuz now I get slimmer packaging, 'The Plan' AND a lower price!

Thanks for your comment, Bucky.

ALSO...will "The Plan" be the first episode on a newly remastered 'Disc 1' or will it be just the seperate BD thrown into the pkg and you just have to KNOW to watch IT first before you watch the series?

I like the old bulky packaging, but I will request the new packaging from Universal. Its good to have options.

CareyD1080p,

You ARE NOT supposed to watch The Plan first. It contains significant spoilers for the ENTIRE series and you are supposed to watch it AFTER everything else.
