3-D Part of HDMI 1.4 Spec Made Public

Share
Posted February 5, 2010 02:39 PM by Juan Calonge

Blu-ray 3DHDMI Licensing, LLC, the agent responsible for licensing the HDMI specification, has announced, on behalf of the HDMI Founders, that it has made the 3-D portion of the HDMI Specification Version 1.4 available for public download on the HDMI Web site at the official HDMI site. This will make it possible even for non-HDMI licensees to access that part of the spec and make their products compatible with it.

The specification defines common 3-D formats and resolutions, with 3-D support for up to 1080p resolution, and under many 3D structures: full side-by-side; half side-by-side; frame packing; field alternative; line alternative; Left + Depth; and Left + Depth + Gfx + Gfx Depth.

"The HDMI Consortium recognizes the importance of standardized 3-D formats for movies, gaming and broadcast content and the need for non-adopter companies and organizations to have access to that portion of the HDMI Specification,” says Steve Venuti, president of HDMI Licensing, LLC. “As the mainstream adoption of 3-D is gaining momentum and content providers define and expand their 3-D roadmaps, HDMI is ready to support this major market development.”

So last year I bought my new Denon 3808 receiver for over $1000 which is 1.3a. If one really wants to go 3d not only do they (usually) need a new TV but also a player and new receiver (if you want all of your video machines to go through the receiver). It won't be financially feasable until there are plenty of 3D options for me.

New TV, new receiver, new player. Sure, we all say we won't - but we will.

Well technically you don't need a new receiver. Just split (with a HDMI 1.4 splitter) the signal, so new display gets 1.4 unaffected and the receiver receives as well seperately. This way no need for new receiver at all. But you will need a HDMI splitter.

Its also possible that new 3D-BD players will have 2 HDMI outputs. 1 for HDMI 1.4 (Video) and one for HDMI 1.3 (Audio). But don't count on that.

Yay! Something for me to adopt to, 10 years down the road from now!

Ugh. If companies are so concerned about adoption rate, then maybe they should stop changing the standard every 5 minutes.

No new TV for me. I can't see 3D anyway. I'm curious to see how many people jump on board with this though.

HMDI 1.4 is just a standard because 1.3 didn't incorparate dual streams and networking. From what I've read, you can still do 1080p with 1.3, it's just the display device has to be able to handle it. There will be adapter units like the one from Mitsibushi for non-1.4 devices so there will be ways get 3D without buying new everything....

Edit: Monster cable is a rip-off...

1080p projectors just dropped under $1k and I copped one. Someone buzz me when 3D projectors do the same.

This is cool and all but in my opinion its too soon. I'm not a huge fan of 3D to begin with and I can definitely live without it at home.

before people start spewing out miss information, you do NOT need to buy a new receiver. lots of the 3-d bluray players will have a dual hdmi port one for audio and one for video, kinda sucks but at least they are thinking about this instead of forcing people to buy new amps. or just use a optical cable.
going 3d isnt going to cost much more.
hd 66 3-d ready projector 699$
ps3/bluray player free(if you already have one) or 299$
glasses will come down in price when sony/panasonic ect release their glasses, im hoping for 70$ range
and the movies

3D isn't worth giving up my Kuro, the fact that a new player AND a new receiver will be needed just makes the decision to not go 3D even easier.

So I obviously no nothing about this, but I see the words public and download. How do I download it? I went to the website and it said I had to be an Adopter, but I thought the download was for the public?

1. optical cable is a no-go for audio b/c you can't pass lossless audio
2. i think other than PS3 Blu-ray players cannot be updated to support 3-D
3. hoping a new receiver won't be needed, i think if going to 3D means gutting most of our current systems it simply will not sell.
4. $70 for glasses? movie theaters give them away at the ticket counter, these should be widely available at next to nothing costs.
5. Sure we can get a $700 3-D projector, but how will it look? I don't think many of us are willing to sacrifice picture quality just to be 3-D.

"before people start spewing out miss information, you do NOT need to buy a new receiver. lots of the 3-d bluray players will have a dual hdmi port one for audio and one for video."

There is one player from Panasonic that has a dual HDMI output. That's one player. Saying lots of players is misinformation if you ask me... And yes, you will probably need a new receiver if you want to take advantage of the lossless audio formats with 3D. Also, you get what you pay for. $700 for a projector. I have a pretty good theory on how it will look.

So, you need a new TV, new receiver, new player (unless you have the PS3 which still doesn't make sense as it's HDMI 1.3), plus glasses which right now appear to be $100 per pair.

Every week, 6-8 people gather at my house to watch movies. Do these companies actually think I will be paying $800+ for glasses alone for my friends?

Looks like 3D will be staying the theater for me.

So you need new Player, new TV, new reciever (all should be compatible with 3D) Damn that is going to be expensive. Do they really think many people will go for this. Not even all people has a blu ray palyer and they only need a player. Here its 3 expensive things they need. Don't see this is gonna be a hit anytme soon. Its gonna be to expensive for customers

But will PS3 still be compatible when you need a whole new HDMI 3D cable to view 3D content?

well the optoma hd66 is based off of the hd65 which was one of the top selling projectors or the last year and a bit, so that has to sy something, and projectorcetral gave it a good review http://www.projectorcentral.com/optoma_hd66_projector_review.htm

i ordered it cant wait to get it.

also i doubt many people can tell the difference between lossless and lossy. heck i cant really tell the difference between 720p and 1080p sometimes i can if im looking for it, but whatever im not a perfectionist. there are going to be flaws with any audio/video equipment
