Final details have surfaced regarding Palisades Tartan's Blu-ray release of Park Chan-Wook's Vengeance Trilogy, comprised of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy and Lady Vengeance, which as previously reported (see blu-ray.com, February 17), released on March 16 as a Best Buy exclusive until June 15. Contrary to initial information, this finally is a four-disc set, loaded with special features. A major improvement for Oldboy from the 2007 release is the inclusion of the three-hour video diary "The Autobiography of Oldboy".
The content breakdown per disc is as follows:
Disc 1: Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (movie and special features)
This BD corresponds to discs 1-2 of the DVD set and contains:
- Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (feature film)
- Audio commentary with director Park Chan-Wook and actor/filmmaker Ryoo Seung-wan
- The Process of Mr. Vengeance
- My Boksu Story
- Crew interviews
- Jonathan Ross on Park Chan-wook
- Soundtrack and photos
- Storyboards
- Original behind-the-scenes feature
- Trailer
Disc 2: Oldboy (movie and special features)
This BD corresponds to discs 3-5 of the DVD set and contains:
- Oldboy (feature film)
- Audio commentaries:
- Director Park Chan-wook
- Park Chan-wook and cinematographer Chung Chung-hoon
- Park Chan-wook and cast
- Five behind-the-scenes featurettes:
- Making The Film – The Cast Remembers
- Production Design
- The Music Score
- CGI Documentary
- Flashback
- Le Grand Prix at Cannes
- Ten deleted scenes with optional commentary
- "The Autobiography of Oldboy": 3-hour video diary.
Disc 3: Lady Vengeance (movie)
This BD corresponds to discs 6-7 of the DVD set and contains
- Lady Vengeance - Regular version
- Lady Vengeance - Fade-To-White version (with Park Chan-wook introduction)
- Audio commentaries:
- Director Park Chan-wook and actress Lee Young-ae
- Park Chan-wook, cinematographer Chung Chung-hoon and art director Choi Hyeon-seok
- Critic Richard Peña
Disc 4: Lady Vengeance (special features)
This DVD is the same disc as disc 8 from the DVD set and contains:
- Making-of featurette
- EPK:
- Teaser
- Trailer
- Highlights
- Second making-of featurette
- The Style of Lady Vengeance:
- Visualization
- Production Design
- Costume & Makeup
- Art
- CG
- Deleted scenes with commentary
- Park Chan-wook:
- Interview with Park Chan-wook
- Park Chan-wook, "Mr. Vengeance"
- Photography featurette
- Director's Choice, A short film recommended by Park Chan-wook
- Character interviews
- Lee Geum-ja
- Professor Baek
- Prisoners
- Families
- Lady Vengeance in Venice
- Get Together
- Trailer
- TV spots
- Poster gallery
The special features from Lady Vengeance were put on a separate disc because disc 3 contains is two full-length feature films in 1080p, so there was no more room to include the special features.
The fourth disc was not authored as a Blu-ray Disc, because the special features "would have to be upconverted for Blu-ray, which a Blu-ray player will do with the DVD anyway." A fourth Blu-ray would have increased the retail price of the set significantly, with little to no benefit in quality.

The first time I watched OldBoy, I remember the hallway-hammer-fight-scene switched aspect ratio from 2.35 to like 2.86 or maybe 3.0-ish (IE: extra-widescreen)...but the 07 Blu-Ray was 2.35 all the way through. Am I just remembering it wrong? And if it did switch aspect ratio, does anyone know if this new release will do the same...'cause I'd be willing to double dip if this was the case. |

Really excited about this release, but I probably won't bite until it becomes a wide release. |

Really considering it, but it will be much cheaper once I can get it at amazon. Last I checked it was $59.99 at the BB website. So tempting though!
Does Oldboy have all the special features from the original BD release plus the 3 hour documentary? I have the Ultimate Edition DVD set in the tin case which includes that documentary. Since I can't see enough to read subs and don't speak Korean I have not seen it, but I hear it is an amazing documentary. Just hope that if all those extras are in a single BD/50 there are no quality related issues with the sound, etc. |

Paddy, I have the original Korean DVD release of "Oldboy" and the aspect ratio appears to be consistent throughout. It might just have been the dramatic impact (pun intended) of the scene. |

I know this might be a silly, but I honestly hope the extras all come with subtitles :P
The old boy features look like the ones I already own with the limited edition steel case DVD version from a few years back... I'm just looking forward in getting the same from the other two movies.
I've been wanting to upgrade for a while, so I'll be eagerly anticipating the release date of this |

is oldbooy getting a remaster to be more in line with Tartan's own dvd release? Or will the previous Starmax sourced transfer remain?
And they are doing two versions of Lady Vengeance on one disc? Why not split the features across the two discs and give each cut of the film a separate disc? |

Bestbuy.com says its already on backorder. No stores within 50 miles of my house have it in stock. Not exactly a best buy exclusive when even best buy doesnt have it. I wan't this set badly. |

No interest in owning the first and third films, which I found flat, but I did pick up OLDBOY, which I love. |
