Gladiator Anniversary Edition Blu-ray for Germany (Update)

Share
Posted March 9, 2010 01:26 PM by Juan Calonge

Universal StudiosAccording to information from local retailers cited by HD site bluray-disc.de, the Germany branch of Universal Studios Home Entertainment will release Gladiator: 10th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray on May 6, a week before the theatrical release of Ridley Scott's latest movie, Robin Hood. Bluray-disc.de also confirms that, due to the "inferior quality" of the first release, a brand new 1080p master will be used for this new edition.

Update

Area DVD has the cover image and release details. Audio and video specifications are unchanged from the 2009 edition; special features are augmented with the inclusion of PocketBlu functionality.

Note that Universal is the studio that holds the European home video rights to Gladiator. The new designation as "Anniversary Edition" also makes a replacement program unlikely.

What a crock of bs. I can't believe these studios do this to customers. It's been less than a year and they're already double-dipping because of an obvious error on their part, and they don't offer any kind of replacement program. I guess I'll live with my first edition...no way I'm double dipping.

Less than a year? It's been less than 6 months!

It's a shame that they duped people into buying this, then admitted their mistake by releasing a superior version that fixes the the problems.

HD Man:

That is why I put mine on Ebay IMMEDIATELY after the first "announcement" of a new transfer. If you haven't put your copy on Ebay yet, I suggest you do it BEFORE an official announcement.

I sidestepped the Sapphire Edition knowing that this re-release would eventually become available. Gladiator is just too popular and profitable a film for the studio to not do a better transfer.

Glad I held out the first time around. "Gladiator" deserves nothing short of solid transfer. It'll be really interesting to see this new transfer side-by-side with the "Sapphire" release...

"replacement program Unlikely"

Puts to rest the theory that the shithouse Blu ray accidentally escaped quality control

Before you get too worried about no replacement program, remember this is Universal--who stuck us with the inferior transfer to begin with. Paramount, who offered a $10 rebate for upgrading from DVD to the Sapphire edition, may do it differently here in the States.

Hopefully this means that the rumor is true and the US will get a remastered version!:)...

To those that are upset i have a question: who forced you to buy 1st shitty edition? Once alarming reviews were up(and they were up before release date), everyone should have boycotted that release to prevent such a disasters in the future. All this bitching about "replacing programs" now is laughable.

giedrys, I confess. I was one of the dumbasses who jumped at the first chance to own Gladiator on blu. I just think it's sad that a company will release an inferior product, knowing that it is halfa**ed, and then turn around and rerelease it 6 months later just to try to get more money. What happened to having respect for your customers. End rant.

I don't understand all the anger here. Everyone knew when the last version came out what a mess it was. It was all over the web. Anyone who bought it deserves to be stuck with it. Blame yourselves when the studios keep releasing these things over and over. Here's a piece of advice. Don't buy it before it comes out. Wait until it gets reviewed and if you can't do that, then you've no one to blame but yourself.

I'm ok with this. I paid $10 for it and returned it for $27.
