Blu-ray MoviesThe Roland Emmerich ultimate disaster movie 2012 was the top-selling title on Blu-ray on the week ended March 7, according to Nielsen VideoScan. Sony's blockbuster moved over three times as many copies as Warner's Where the Wild Things Are. Coming in third was Disney's Blu-ray release of the Studio Ghibli animated movie Ponyo.

Blu-ray market share for new releases Ponyo's 34% is a new record for a theatrical animated movie, clearly beating the 24% that Up got in its first week on shelves.

Overall sales figures

Blu-ray disc revenue: $30.62 million (up 188.55% from the same week last year)
Packaged media sales revenue: $224.71 million (up 26.01% from the same week last year)
Blu-ray revenue share: 13.6%

Nice market share with 2012. I haven't picked it up yet, but plan on it. Nice to see that number close to 50%

Very happy to see ponyo getting a nice share. The $10 coupon probably helped imensley.

50 % (and above) will definetly happen this year, Avatar seems liek the most likely candidate, but i think we'll also see Iron Man 2 do 50 plus business when it hits blu later in the year

Ponyo didn't do too bad. Glad to see it. Now Disney just needs to start putting better Japanese audio on future releases and all will be right with the world.

It did in my area, it was sold out at several stores I went to release day.

Wait a minute. If Ponyo got 34% and Wild Things got 28%, how is ponyo in 3rd place behind it?

2012 wasn't really "garbage", it wasn't shakespeare, but it also wasn't street fighter: legend of chun li bad. emerich has made much worse and less enjoyable films

Just saw Ponyo and it was great. Completely bizarre, but great. It's absolutely beautifully crafted. Ghibli films have the amazing ability to capture a sense of adventure and freedom that's just breathtaking.

Tristanchord85,

That's what I was wondering too at first, but I imagine that those percentages are the market share of blu-ray vs. DVD for each title. The total number of copies sold for each title is not reported, just the order: 2012 --> WTWTA --> Ponyo.

So WTWTA sold more BR copies than Ponyo, but a greater percentage of Ponyo sales were BR vs. DVD.

Also, if WTWTA was 19.99 everywhere except for Target and Amazon (for only half a day), then I think it would of been in the mid 30% range for copies sold.

Target had WTWTA for 19.99, unless it only applied to Los Angeles.

I really enjoyed 2012. And I went in thinking it was going to be terrible and usually when I do that a self-fulling prophecy type deal occurs. 2012 was born for Blu!

I haven't seen WWTA on sale anywhere... Must be sold out all over. But there's plenty of 2012 copies and special editions packing the shelves. I've bought like 6 movies in the last week, could not find any store that carried WWTA. Not at best buy, target, wal mart, fry's, nowhere. Not even a spot on the shelf. Strange. Where the wild things Aren't.

Frankly, i thought Spirited away was more bizarre than Ponyo. Most of his movies are bizarre. But they are amazing.
